So when you are heading out to the blind early in the morning and its pitch dark, what light do you use? A regular flashlight or do you use one of those red lenses, or something else.

I try not to use any light. Nothing against them but like it better without. If I need a light then I just use a green light to find what I am looking for.

Now my 8 year old will use a white head lamp and a white flashlight in each hand if I would let him.

surefire if I have to and I'm in snake country...usually don't use a light though for walking to my stands in the fields....my wife uses a surefire b/c she is chicken, but I drop her off to walk into her stand and drive off and when she has had enough time to get out in the middle of the clearcut, I'll call her on the radio to tell her a bobcat/mountain lion/pack of yotes just crossed the road infront of me and I was just checking on her. If she won't talk to me for a while I can get in a quick nap before daylight.

I used a cheap headlamp I bought from Walmart. I don't think deer notice the light as much as they would the extra noise from me stummbling around in the dark.

I just use a little 2-AA cell maglite with my fingers kinda' covering the lens, just to provide enough light to avoid fresh meadow muffins. My uncle uses the headlights of his truck. They stay on long enough after he cuts it off for him to be in his stand before they go out. I don't like driving that close to the stand, myself, especially if I'm about to sit it, but he kills nice deer every year, so who am I to fault him?

If possible I don't use a light, but if I need a light it is a green one. That is suppose to be the best color to use while walking to stand etc.

Petzl headlight ! It's the best by far, it has a red light beside the clear light with several other options. Headlights keep your hands free so you can use the to climb or keep limbs from hitting you in the face etc. They have several models, my main one is 350 lumens. The smaller ones around 40 to 60 lumens work great and the batteries last a long time.

Anyone can own a fancy gun but can you shoot it ?

Nothing like announcing to every deer in the area that you are their to kill them, so they better head to the next county! Try and not use one. Memorize your travel route to and from blind and go for it.

Ha-ha, that brings back a memory. Years ago I conducted a covert insertion into a managed, bow-only public hunting area in Maryland with NVG's cool at 0500 in the morning. Got up my tree with my climber and completed my set-up with no artificial illumination whatsoever (very cool right?). However, I had just screwed myself and didn't yet know it. Another bowhunter came in about 30 min before light and started setting up only 75 yards away but I had no flashlight to alert him to my presence (and I didn't want to make any noise). He shot a deer - I didn't. Now I always carry a Petzl headlamp!

Thank you dear Lord for equipping me with incisors.

I don't use a light. I go to the stand the evening before opening day and leave the morning after season closes bolt

A light doesn't bother deer in the slightest. I walk up on deer bedded while I'm coon hunting with dogs barking and everything else. As long as I don't get within 50 yards of them they will just lay there and let me walk by. We were shining a tree one night with four 21 volt light and 2 does come walking up in the middle of us. They are different animals at night.

light or no light they know your coming down the path, the only way to get to your blind undetected is to be teletransported to it
