Anyone got any info on the rut in the Rock Springs area. Getting ready to head down next week?

I wouldn't call Rock Springs "deep south Texas" as it's more west and central if anything, but south?

Anyway, the rut out there should be going on about now and probably has been since about Thanksgiving week, or before.

When you are 70 miles from Mexico you are in DEEP SOUTH TEXAS. The rut is in December in that area, not Thanksgiving, but thanks for the response.

you need a geography lesson.

rocksprings is in the western region of the hill country.......hence the "rock" in rocksprings.


hebbronville, zapata, san ygnacio, encinal,.....those are deep south texas

I'm going hunting in WAY DEEP south texas in a few weeks... right outside of El Paso. that's like... 5 miles from mexico, so it's got to be the deepest of the deep south texas.


I mean heck....I've always loved south texas. My parents moved to south texas several years ago when they retired. It's on the frio river between leakey and vanderpool. Some people call this the hill country, what with the hills and all.... but anyone with a lick of sense knows this is really south texas.

Just got back from a weekend south of Dryden....saw 84 mule deer does....5 whitetail does! The only bucks seen were young spikes!

Rocksprings is in the Edwards Plateau, which is the Hill Country, a long way from what is considered south Texas. With that being said, we used to hunt between Rocksprings and Carta Valley, our rut started kicking in around the 2nd or 3rd week of December.

I always thought of South Texas as South of San Antonio.

To me, you aren't getting into South Texas until you don't see any more cedars, oaks, elm, etc. Nothing but mesquite, huisache, cactus, and big, big rattlesnakes.

Yep thats South Texas, I should know. Hill country isn't south Texas unless it is in Rio Grand City and that area. You can't get anymore South than the Valley.

I've always considered south Texas anything south of Hwy 90 between Del Rio and San Antonio, and then everything west of I37 to Corpus Christi, but probably the best discription is when you no longer see the cedar trees, Big oaks and blackjacks, but only the mesquite, and white brush and cactus, and when you are in south Texas you'll know it, because if it doesn't stick you, it will bite you!

Tell anyone who was born and raised in San Antonio that you are hunting in Rocksprings and call it deep south Texas, they will look at you kind of funny and wonder if you are either lost, or maybe some kind of Yankee transplant.

The size of the deer alone in Rocksprings will tell you it's not south Texas, that is unless you are hunting under a high fenced breeder ranch.

I hunted just a little north of Rocksprings a few years ago. Our rut was over December 5th. Premium time was thanksgiving week

This year I hunted South Texas for the first time. Los Angeles between Dilley and Cotulla. Beautiful Country down there.

Notice...this looks nothing like Rocksprings. Just sayin'.

Lots of game to watch all day in the brush and deer can be hard to see that can be standing in the brush until they step out and even then they blend in so well you have to be on your toes.

Lot's of other game, and there just seems to always be something out there to watch which is pretty amazing to see that brush come to life.

There are a lot of interesting birds also. My favorite is the Green Jay which is native to South American and rarely seen further north than San Antonio. I love to watch them and hear their raspy call, and watch them eat my corn. Beautiful birds!

No....Don't think so!

It's just that what he compared Rocksprings to is like calling Corpus Christi the Bahama's. Yeah it's got an ocean, but that's where the comparison stops!

Not picking on Danny by any means, but more of trying to not misslead others who may read these posts, and that are not familiar with the area and for educational purposes.

Here is a link to TPWD with a map that they consider the three zones in Texas which is more official than anyone else has posted. It's not an exact, but if the state sees it that way then it's good enough for me.

This is only the dove zones and keep in mind you have coastal regions and eastern rigions, and western regions etc. that aren't marked on the this map, but Texas has a diverse ecological environment that differ like night and day.

My place is south of 90 just outside of D'Hanis, TX. I've hunted in south Texas (Dilley, Cotulla, etc.) and although the landscape isn't drastically different the deer sure are. If my lease is in south Texas then I want my money back.

yeah your way off buddy deep south texas for me is considered hebbronvile and below like san isidro, la gloria, falfurrias, encino,rachel just to name a few towns and im from edinburg about 20 miles from the border this is the true deep south texas region in my books

He might not have goten flamed if he would have just said south texas, but calling it "deep" south texas is just plain wrong.
