When you guys gut shot a deer do yall worry about the crap getting on the meat? I shot a doe the other day and my mom was with me and after she saw the crap when i gutted the deer, she didnt want any of it! The stomache stuff was all over the tenderloins so i didnt keep them. Backstrap and hindquarters were fine and as luck would have it, i had to shoot twice after the gut shot and it hit right through the front quarters so i didnt take the front quarters. I soon remembered why i usually shoot does in the neck or head. If yall shot a deer and the stomache acid junk got on the tenderloins or any meat, would yall just clean it off and take it or not eat it?

Just wash it off no problem.

If you can gut it and wash it shortly after kill then by all means it is a good piece of meat. Rinse and eat like everyone says. If it takes you a hour or more to get to the deer then I don't think I would.

X2 Just don't let it sit to long before cleaning it.

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Wash it really well and soak it in light salt water for an hour or so, rinse it again before cooking it to eat.

Don't waste an entire deer because you made a bad shot. Wash it out thoroughly with water and it's good to go.

I've gut shot plenty of deer and have never had any issue whatsoever with the meat.

I bet if you saw what happened in a commercial meat operation, your mess would look like no mess at all. Wash it off as quickly as possible and it will be fine.

I once gut shot a deer when I was sick with the flu. I wasnt worried about the stuff in his stomach I was worried about the stuff in mine. When the smell hit me I started gagging and almost puked right on the deer.

I assume ecoli is your fear. Ecoli does not penetrate solid tissue. Rinse and cook and you have no worries. I will say that last one I did this to I took the hams, shoulders and straps and skipped the tenders simply to avoid the whole nasty deal.

I had an older fella tell me once if you do gut shoot one keep a spray bottle with some vinegar. The vinegar will kill the smell and then wash off the vinegar.

How have you gut shot plenty of deer? Sounds like to me either 1)you are a bad shot or 2)you need to sight in the gun again or 3)you are taking shots while the deer is running or walking.

I just dont understand how you can gut shoot "plenty of deer".

By the way, wash it off very soon, put in salt water, put in milk for a day, then cook and eat. Milk will get rid of the bad, acid taste and neutralize it.

"Plenty" was probably an exaggeration. But 3 or 4.

-First one was a big spike and he was running. No I don't feel bad.
-Second one was quartering towards and either angle was more severe than I guessed or bullet ricocheted inside. Went in right behind shoulder but caught some gut on way out. Deer dropped - it was a good shot.
-Third one was slightly angled and I didn't account for it, but it was a "buck fever" shot. Hit lung going in, but a bit of gut going out. Again, ran like 15 yards. The shot was effective, but imperfect.

Those are all I can remember, but I'm sure I've done it to a doe at some point.

First you gut shot it (it happens to just about all of us sooner or later), then you shot it two more times. And that reminds you of why you usually shoot at the neck or head? How many shots does that take? Shooting a doe in the head can be tricky. Even when the rest of the deer is still, the head is usually moving. bolt

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.
