She is not the strongest person in the world. Gun would be for personal protection. What cal. and gun do you suggest? I know that they have developed "self defense" bullets for these cal. but are they enough?

9mm or .38 Special are both fine for defense. Go to a range that rents pistols and allow her to decide which pistol is right for her.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed with both.

Real question is what gun will she be most comfortable with, revolver or auto. If she's not that strong, manipulating the slide of an auto probably wouldn't be easy for her.

By personal protection do you mean in home or concealed carry?

If it won't be for concealed carry, for pete's sake get her a gun that's big enough for her to shoot well. There's no sense in getting something like a Ruger LCP if it will never be carried. A good 2 or 4" K Frame S&W (like the ones Jskin has for sale in the classifieds right now) would be a great choice for a house gun.

good advise, thanks. Limited knowledge on handguns, only rifles and shotguns in the house currently.

If it is for the house, and she has experience with shotguns, a tactical shotgun is a fine defense weapon.

There's so much I don't know that I don't even know what I don't know.

Exactly. She needs to shoot both and decide which she's most comfortable with.
