hey everyone i was just wondering what yalls thoughts were about otters... we have a 3 acre pond on our land and it has lilly pads on it(under control), and i was wondering if the otters do anything harmful/helpful to the area. thanks.

The lily pads will be fine but your fish better take cover. It doesnt take them long to clear out a small pond and I would bet there's more than one.

I shot one in the name of science one time. (I wanted to look one over). I won't shoot another one after I educated myself about them.
I leave them alone now, they really only fish out the rough fish population. They are hell on carp.
We have a pretty good population of otters on my duck lease. They are really neat animals to watch.

My dad recently saw one is his pond and contacted the game warden about what to do. The response was: As long as your lake is private and not public waters, you may take the otter by shooting or trapping. You may only use the hide if you obtain a CITES tag from a TPWD Law Enforcement Office. Chances are that the animal will move on as they cover a wide area and single animals are most often traveling. The reputation that they have for cleaning out a lake of fish is not warranted as they typically will not do that.

i guess you better shoot it. tell us how it tastes! lol haha didnt shoot it but i didnt see him this weekend, looked around the pond and idk if he's traveling through but seems to have made multiple tunnels in one spot about a foot off the water, some have to be at least 15 feet from the water too.. nice mount btw population. hayraker where bouts in red river county??
