Just curious what you guys were seeing around the area.

Went out this morning and saw one decent buck and 3 younger bucks between 6:30 - 7. All 4 showed absolutely no interest in the does around the feeder.

I had a buck and doe come out of the mesquite together 30 yards in front of me right before dark yesterday.

Our lease is close to Winters, we hunted opening weekend and two bucks were killed chasing does, and one other was seen chasing a doe but out of gun range.

Our lease is just south of Winters and we have not seen any evidence of rut activity.

That is what we have been hearing around Ballinger... Some people have seen some good rut activity and others have seen none. Seems weird to me that there are such differences within just a few miles.

All of the good looking does are around Winters. Nothing but ugly fat ones around Ballinger. The big bucks are heading North.

Well i was out at the lease this past weekend... I think the full moon really messed up the activity during the day. I didn't see many deer or any kind of rut activity. Hopefully this cold front gets them goin.

I thought the rut in Runnels Co. had already passed but as we were leaving the property after the morning hunt on Sunday a young 6pt. was hauling after a doe and they hopped the fence crashing into the property within about 20 feet of the vehicle so I dont know any more... confused2

I have seen plenty of deer this year and lots of bucks- just no shooters.... but absolutely no rut activity. I don't know what gives unless it's going to happen this weekend. :: Fingers Crossed ::

Was at my lease in Talpa last week and into the weekend...didn't see squat. A few young does, and one young basket buck. Maybe it was the weather...maybe it was the moon, who knows. The only deer taken on the property so far this season were from my ol' man, and me.

Mine (Vet Day)

His (the day after Vet Day)

I can't complain though, I got 30lbs of sausage and a good amount of backstrap and steaks off of mine. Dad donated his.

It's offical I have not seen squat in runnels county. Chalk it up to another crappy year.

I have come to the conclusion that the rut is more drawn out in this part of the state than in other areas. I hunted in south texas for five years and the peak of the rut was like clockwork every year. The rut lasted strong two to three weeks and then everything was back to 'normal'. After hunting around San Angelo for a few years and now between Ballinger and Talpa, I have witnessed the rut being much more drawn out and no real 'peak.' I saw multiple broken up bucks as early as the third weekend of October. As the season as progressed I have seen a few bucks chasing almost every weekend, including last weekend. Very few of the bucks I have seen have a full, unbroken set of antlers. The only thing I can attribute this to is a longer, more drawn out rut, without a defined peak.

Gillom,

I agree. I see no real peak but bucks-chasing happens for over a month in ballinger. October to early December.
