I hunt just West of Olney, and this is the worst year of hunting in 3 years. We dont have a single oak tree on our place. I have not seen a mature deer chasing all year. So I cant answer the rut question, but if I had to guess, it is already over.

For southeast Texas, the rut had already started in September.. Of course, there is more than one "rut" according to the professionals. If a doe does not get pregnant during the first "rut", she will come back into estrus 28 days later-just like human females. I would venture that by the time the 2nd "rut", or 3rd "rut" rolls around, the activity will have tapered off so much so that it would appear that there is no "rut". Especially considering that once gun season starts, most mature deer will be nocturnal, and probably breeding at night as well.
I had high hopes that this would be a better season than last year, but alas my hopes have been dashed. I've seen fewer deer this year, than last.

I hunt east of Olney just south of Bryson. I saw some chasing the first 2 weekends of gun season but not much since then. My dad said he saw 2 bucks doggin does saturday night. I think for the most part it is over but there should be some unbread does cycling again around the first of Dec.
