My wife now is considering a hand gun. I was thinking a 38 revolver?? Would love to hear your opinions and if your wives have a preference.

She should go with a 380. Good round for the wife to handle.

I do not know where you are located but there are gun ranges in many places that rent guns, good way for her to try several out. Bullet Trap in Plano has large selection. We have taken several ladies there to select their gun. Like Txtrophy85 said some with smaller hands do require a smaller pistol / grip.

Take her to a gun store or range that has rentals and get her to handle some different ones. like one friend said after we shopped for her gun, "this is mre fun that shopping for shoes"

Several ladies I have helped find their first gun wound up choosing a 38 revolver. One had trouble with the autos cycling, not enough resistance for reliable cycling.

I have an LCP that my wife doesn't like shooting she says it is too wild. She likes her Glock 26 and I put a mag extension for her little finger.

You don't list your location in your profile but if you are close to Plano the Bullet Trap has rental guns. Go let her shoot several and pick the one she likes the best.

A close 2nd to her Glock is a Walther.

S&W M36. A great revolver that will keep its value. Autos are dangerous and complicated for a new shooter.

From a similar thread earlier this year.

I took my wife to a range that has pistols for demo along with as many as I could borrow of the likely suitable models. I let her shoot them and see what SHE liked and shot the most comfortably and accurately. I tried to not offer comments other than making sure she knew how the controls worked and how to aim different sights.

She ended up with a Glock 19 by her choice with no encouragement from me. She shot it amazingly well even under time pressure. Others that she seriously considered were the S&W M&P 4" in 9mm, and Ruger SR9 in 9mm.

The Ruger would have been her first choice except that the mags were too hard for her to load. So, let her load the mags. If she cannot quickly and easily load the mags without assistance, then it needs to come off the list.

Others considered which did not make the short list were HK, Glock 17, Sig 226 and 229, and revolvers of any kind.

ETA - Those that are suggesting revolvers, try shooting and reloading them under time pressure. They are more difficult to fire accurately under time pressure and way slower to reload than most semi-autos. Women are intelligent and quite capable of understanding how to run a pistol and shoot it accurately, often better than many men I see at public ranges.

Make sure to try a rapid fire sequence for control and accuracy as well as the ability to make a quick reload.

Don't give her anything that you would not carry yourself. If you cannot hit reliably with it under time pressure, then she probably cannot either. If you think it is cheap junk, she will too. If you cannot reload it quickly under pressure, she will not be able to either.

Last, sign her up for a pistol class, not a CHL class, but a basic multi-day pistol skills and tactics class. A good class is invaluable. If the SHTF and you are counting on her to come through and pop a bad guy in your bedroom or while carrying concealed, it is a whole 'nother level than shooting paper at the range.

after many hours of deliberation, thats what were going with.

imo a .38 is a better choice than a .380, and you can't get much simpler than a double action revolver

Do to the long trigger pull I would stay away from the Keltec , LCP, and the Kahr p380. I imagine the taurus tcp has a long trigger pull as well but have no experience

Im guessing she wants to carry with her?

I would look at 38 revolver, Sig P238 380, and Glock 26

My wife carries a 38 sp +p revolver in a pink. She loves it. My wife is also a small woman and handles it quite well.

If she is looking to get a concealed license I would have her qualify with a semi-auto so she can carry either. 9mm I think would be a good round. Take her to the nearest gun shop and let her put a few in her hand to see what is comfortable. Just takes shooting to get her confident with semi-auto. Glad to see more woman interested.

Go with a 38 revolver or a 357 and shoot 38's in it. She would not have to worry about bulling back the slide or it jamming. If its for a chl use a semi- auto to quailfy. Then go she can carry either or.

Here you go buddy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuyBqm3wGII

Easy to hold, easy to conceal, easy to shoot, not a lot of recoil and simple to operate.

The 38 Special is just a good old reliable round that will server her well for many, many years.

Yes if they didnt have lady on them , I know men would buy them. I looked up an airlight in 357 but looks like it would break my wrist with one shot.

x10000 on what some have already said.

38 revolver, especically for women with little to no experience around pistols. Does not get any simpler, point, squeeze trigger and repeat till it goes click! No safeties, slides to mess with. No chance for FTE/FTF for them to mess with. No magazines to load with little fingers/hands.
One thing I will also mention (did it for my wife)get one with either internal hammer, smooth hammer. This helps if they are going to carry in their purse to prevent the hammer snagging on something....

And follow what someone also said and qualify with your auto for CHL so she has the option to carry either.

This wife prefer's her 1911 in .45ACP.

However, if your spouse is new to handguns, I'll echo the sentiments here.

.38 revolver is as simplistic and reliable as they come. Rent and borrow as many handguns as your budget will allow. And please dont skimp or be critical. The ultimate decision is her's and you want her comfortable if God forbid, her life is ever challenged.

Practice. Practice. Practice.
