I have been searching high and low to find where it states what shot is legal shot for snipe on public lands. Does anyone know or can provide a link to TPWD where it states this info? I used to hunt them all the time with lead when I had a lease. I know this property will allow lead for dove, I was trying to find out if it applies to snipe as well.
Of course I know not to have lead with me when hunting any waterfowl. So if anyone has info please post.

Some places are non tox regardless of species, but that is stated in the regs for those places.

Don't know. But on a different note, you get your motor fixed, and are you moving back to Austin?

snipe only needs a couple of pallets to knock them out. i recently bought 5 winchester boxes at wallmart of number 7 steel to shoot snipe while duckhunting.
make sure the shelves read steel, some of these boxes say target load or game load. But after searching for 10 minutes at wallmart, you will find the steel load that reads steel on the shelves.
the gamewarden hate shelves with no mention of lead or steel (especially in number 7 or 7 1/2 since most small loads are lead), so by bying the shelves with mention of steel on it shows them you have done your homework and know what you are doing.
u probably agree with me that most people dont know the difference between jacksnipe and other snipe (killthese) thats why they are not risking it. it is a very fun hunt and excellent tasting bird.

Those #7 shot 2 3/4" steel loads are just about the same price as lead. I'd go with those.
Dear Lord please bullwhip me for saying this but I agree, Marcstar is in the lead. Please nobody use this as a quote!!!

Its not like hunting dove or quail, you will be lucky to fire 5 rounds while hunting snipe; just buy a box of #6 steel and that should last a while.

Hey Hopedale, still havent got around to takeing the boat in to get it looked at. I've been busy and the only hunting I have been doing has been walk in on some public rice fields. Its been slow out there, with one duck per trip. Thats why I wanted to get out there and bust some of them snipe that are everywhere.

You can use lead for Snipe. It is a migratory bird, not waterfowl. But that is where the problem comes in with most public lands. A lot of places are open for waterfowl, but only waterfowl, thus Snipe will not be listed as legal game. I got one lake pressured into adding Snipe as legal game in the wording this year and another will come on board next year.
As said, you could run into areas that require non tox for all hunting. And some other states do require steel shot for Snipe. And then some hunting areas that allow snipe hunting only allow it on dates and times when waterfowl is legal making them difficult to hunt unless you want to really anger some duck hunters as you walk around blasting away at Snipe.
I use everything from 7 1/2 lead and 6 steel with a modified or full choke, but most conditions I use 7 steel or 8 lead and a Skeet to IC choke.
7 steel is really not a bad load. Realize if you had one ounce of 7 steel and once ounce of 7 1/2 lead, you actually have several more pellets in the once ounce of 7 steel. Steel weighs considerably less. but it is faster and penetrates better than lead at shorter ranges. It can be devastating on close flushing snipe.
If birds are flushing really close and your quick on the ID and a snap shot, my favorite load is an 8 1/2 spreader load or #9 load and a cylinder choke. I can often come close to a perfect 8 shot/8 bird limit when I have these conditions and use the spreader load. 7 steel works well for this kind of shooting also BTW.
