I've been lurking for some time and love the Forums. But I have come the time I need a question answered. What caliber do you use for hunting hogs? I have been invited to a Hog Hunt down around Cotulla. I have shot hogs with my 6mm from the deer stand, but we will be hunting at night and within 50 yards they say. I had thought about my Lever action 45LC or 30.30 but would like to know what ya'll would use. I have plenty of time so I can save up and get another gun if I have to.

ANY OF THOSE THREE CALIBERS SOUND GREAT TO ME I THINK THE BIGGER QUESTION IS SCOPE OR NO SCOPE ( LIGHT OR NO LIGHT)
SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD EXCUSE TO BUY A NEW GUN... I GO BUY A PISTOL IN 45 LC TO MATCH THE CARBINE YOU HAVE!

Thanks, guys. I am leaning towards no scope. We will hunt at night with spotlights. I already have a Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC to match the carbine and have reloaded some stout 250gr. Jacketed Hollowpoints for hunting with. I sure am hoping someone will say something I don't have so I can start looking for something to puchase.

I always wanted a lever gun in 45/70. That should take care of a pig or two.
If I were to go with what ya got I guess ya could just pick one but I would give a slight edge to the 45LC for the cool factor. Plus you will probably never hunt anything else with it so why not a pig.
It ain't easy being me.

Have had some run with a 300 win mag, just depends on shot placement. Have shot 1 with a 22mag that dropped in it tracks and others that ran like he!!, just goes back to shot placement.
Definitely agree on a low powered scope, iron sights are hard to see at night.

Welcome to The Forum. You should be more than set with the rifle and pistol in 45LC. With the handloads you listed I think you will drop any pig you shoot at. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Any caliber will work if you get a shot behind their ear or a lung or heart shot. If you are off a little, a .22-250 is so explosive it adds a lot of shock. It will vaporize anything in the chest cavity, head shots, whatever.
Just an option for an off shot where a larger caliber with a soft point will only mushroom and not fragment. I think you will be pleased as most will drop in their tracks.
I have seen .30 calibers knock some hogs down, then they get up...
Always an exception to every case.

Shot placement is what I can not stress enough. Hogs will go down faster it they shot behind ear. It is just habit for me now. You could be surprised what small roud will do the job. Use what you are most cofortable with. 7MM is over kill in my book. If you use 270, 30-30, 30-06, 243 those will do fine.

Yote, If I am not mistaken, a 7mm is about .280 So with that in mind, a 7mm is overkill, but a 270 or 30 caliber is not ?? I am certain that ANY well placed round will take a hog down. Anything from .22 to 454 Just kill all of them you can PLEASE. We have to get these things under control in short order..

30-30 has plenty of punch for hogs and in a lever, quick follow up shots, at night with a spot light a scope on low power will suprise you how well it works!

Well, in that case...I use a Ruger 77/44 with a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5x20 scope. It's short, powerful, and easy to carry. I shoot Hornady 240gr XTP.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

What ever is closest.
Of what you spoke of, the 30-30 is astronomically better round for medium to large game than the 45 Colt, although as stated above it will work, and has a COOL factor as well.
I have killed them this year with 308's, 223's, and a 9mm pistol. And scattered a crowd with a shotgun with buckshot, didnt find any, hope it killed 6 or 8...
DT is right, kill them all. Oh, and a friend of mine killed two with his truck, on purpose.

I use a 220 swift and havnt had any problems with any of them getting up and walking away. A nice and well placed shot takes care of the pig....... Either in between the eyes or behing the ears.........

We were out today doing a little shooting. I had forgot how hard my little Ruger 44 mag carbine shoots. With various factory 240s that thing was packing a wallup. That little gun is good to every bit of a 100 yds and then some. the steel plates we were shooting sounded like some one hit them with a sledge hammer.
It ain't easy being me.
