I don't have too much of an issue identifying the ducks I shoot, but every now and then there is a disagreement among the hunting party on the identity of a particular duck. It would be nice to have an independent resource to settle the argument. I've looked at a few books but have not been impressed with anything I have run across. Can anyone recommend a good field guide for identifying ducks. It would be really nice to find something small and waterproof (for obvious reasons), but I would be happy to find anything helpful.

it would just make it easier. and no matter how much you know your birds there is always an argument about the id of that one bird.

I got some buddys that only know of two breeds of ducks.
Mallards, and fish eaters.
If it does not have a green head it is a fish eater. Thus they do not shoot it.
"Jeromy we had some kind of sea duck come in today, I do not know what it was it hung around for ever. I think Brindingham shot him when it left us"

They're easier to identify when they're legs down.

Any duck hunter worth a hoot can identify ducks in flight by their size, flight pattern, wing beat, quacks and sounds, flock size, etc.
Now, if you can't identify a bird in hand by its beak and speculum, then well you probably need to do some homework. Try Google my good friend...
Duck ID guides should only be used by absolute newbies.
