Don't have any data left but if I remember correctly it like the heavier bullets that were round nose sp's.

One of my favorite 6mm Remington loads: 85 grain Nosler Partition, Federal brass, Winchester WLR primers, 47.5 grs IMR-4831, COL-2.825" average velocity for three shots at 15 feet - 3,252 FPS. This recipe is very effective on antelope and mule deer.

headshot: I think you may be mistaken on the twist. By the time the M700 was introduced in '62 and the name of the cartridge had been changed from 244 Rem to 6MM Rem, the slow twist mistake had been corrected.

this one has a 1-14 twist 24 inch barrel i myself thought they have changed this by then but found out the early ones still had the slow twist. ive been a gunsmith off and on since 81, and only seen 1 other 700 with that rwist.but they did change the twist 3 times on the 721=700

Interesting. Do you think that Remington, mistakenly put these slow twist bbls in 6MM Rem on a few M700's? When was your M700 manufactured? thanks

I thought Chuck had an article about the twist but I have not found it yet.

FWIW, I looked back thru some older reloading manuals from the '60's and '70's. They are all pretty consistent saying that the 244 was introduced in '55 with a 12" twist, and the cartridge was reintroduced in '63 as the 6MM Rem with a 9" twist to handle 100gr bullets and compete better with the 243Win as a dual purpose cartridge.

Sounds like they may have left the slower twist in the varmint weight barrels. I don't recall ever reading that anywhere. Do you recall if the other slow twist 700's that you ran across were varmint weight, also?

I have a 1957 Remington 722 chambered in .244 rem with a 1 in 12 twist. Verified twist with a cleaning rod.
Worked up some loads using 70gr Sierra Match HPBT and W760 powder. An absolute tack driver, but was unhappy with the temperature sensitivity of the W760 powder, so now I am currently working on loads using Varget.
Keep in mind a few barrels were produced with a 1 in 9 1/2 twist while still being labeled as .244 Rem. By then, it was too late to correct the bad image so they changed the name and started labling barrels as 6mm Rem. The change in twist occured BEFORE the change in name. I am not aware of any barrels labeled 6mm Rem as having the 1 in 12 twist.
If your 700 is a varmint weight barrel, it's possible they did the 1 in 12 twist for lighter bullets. Never heard of this if true. Very interesting.
