I am wanting to buy a 4 wheeler but have no idea where to start. I do not want to drop 8 or 10 thousand dollars on one but would like to find something that will last for a while. I am a big guy so I need something that will haul my big butt around. I will mainly use it for hunting purposes but would like to do some trail riding too.

Are used 4 wheelers a curse? I have always thought that people rag them out real bad and then get rid of them. Any thoughts on this issue would be greatly appreciated!!!

Just shop around. I bought a Suzuki 400 a few years ago that only had a few hours on it and it was in very good shape. Don't be afraid to ask questions about how it's been used. Now is a bad time to be looking, might find one cheaper after hunting season is over.

Most are pretty tough and hard to tear up but I think one that has been jacked up, snorkel tubed, or has over sized tires would be on my avoid list. If you get more then 400cc definitely buy a 4 wheel drive! These big machines are heavy and you will use the 4 wheel drive if you do any serious trail riding. A winch is also a handy item to get or have. I have an atv & utv and each has a pro & con to them. I've seen some pretty good deals on craigslist, but I agree after hunting season the prices will drop a little more. I don't think you will find one used but they are installing them with power steering now and that would be a welcomed item on my Suzuki 500. The arms do get tired with the steering torque that mine puts out. Good luck!

Shop around, craigslist, ebay, this forum and other sites. They can be had for good prices. Do some research and decide for sure do you want an ATV or a UTV. I have had both but spent the money to settle on a UTV because of multiple passengers and overall use of the vehicle. I don't know how big you are but I woukd go with at least a 500 for a big person. A friend of mine is 6' and weighs 350, even a 500 was dwarfed under his size. He said he felt uneasy on it and ended up selling it. Good luck!

When I bought mine I went for ground clearance and the Arctic Cat had 11+" w/o mods.

Stick to the Hondas and Yamahas. Avoid Polaris like the plague.

we have a Honda 450 and a Honda Rincon. I'm 5-11 and about 280. Both work fine for me. I'm a BIG honda fan. Look around on Craigslist and you can find good ones for sale. As said nabove, avoid the ones that are lifted, snorkled, big tires, etc Overly modified generally means dogged out.

Honda Forman 500 hands down the best. Mine have been ridden hard-put up wet- and not very well taken care of yet have never failed me. A new manual shift Foreman will run you about $6000, or look for good used ones for around $3500-5000

I've run on a used '03 Polaris 325 Trail Boss 2X4 for the last 4 years with zero issues. Bought a new Polaris Ranger 800 4X4 this year and things are even better. Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha all make good ATV's too. If you talk to 20 different people you'll get 20 different answers on what brand to buy and which to avoid. Try to find a used one with not a lot of hours and hasn't been modded out. Get a title if you can, and don't be afraid to ask questions before you buy.

I sold a 2007 grizzly 700 EPS that was in mint condition and never abused. So people do sell bikes that are not ragged out. You just have to hunt for them. The reason I sold the ATV is that I hunt 90% of the time and a UTV works out better for hauling people and supplies. I am a larger guy and I was more comfortable on the UTV. I am a big fan of the Kawasaki Mule and Polaris Ranger Crew as the owner of both makes.
