A good reminder every year:

"You want to make sure the muzzle is always pointed in a safe direction," said Sudderth, the Palo Pinto County chief deputy. "Just be extremely careful when handling a loaded firearm."

Sadly, this year's reminder cost someone a husband and will give the decedent's friend will have nightmares for a long time.

She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

No animal is worth the loss of a human life and its tragic impact on a family . How tragic that a human life was lost over an animal that most would equate to a common cockroach.

The lack of a shooting opportunity when sporting firearms are left unloaded can be a very, very good thing.

Safe firearm practices are deeply rooted in having the right priorities.

I didn't know Clinton, but I know almost all of his pallbearers. That group of kids has been through alot over the years, but they are good guys. Clinton had hunted all of his life, knew what was safe, but one little mistake ended his life.

The accident happened at 9am on a Sunday morning. I heard about it later that afternoon. My wife knew Clinton and the fact that I was out hunting that day made her very nervous.

It's a definite tragedy and could have been avoided. I'm sure his family will appreciate all the prayers.

Tragic. And definitely a violation of the most basic of gun handling rules.

Purely idle speculation, but I wonder what caused the apparent hang-fire?

Quote:
On the day of the accident, Colgin tried to shoot a feral hog in a field from the truck's passenger seat, but the rifle did not fire, said Mike Sudderth, chief deputy with the Palo Pinto County Sheriff's Department.

He handed the gun to his friend butt-first, and it went off, the deputy said.

Could this be another case of a problem with the trigger mechanism in a Remington 700? Does anyone have any more details?

Absolutely tragic. I lost a cousin years ago, who also failed to keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. He'd only been married 6 weeks.

You can't stress safety enough.

Good lord that's sad.

I had a friend that wanted me to shoot his new rifle so I aimed and pulled the trigger and nothing happened. I pointed the gun in the air and to check and see if it was still on safety. As I was looking the gun went off in my hand. It could have been a terrible accident had I not paid attention.
