I cant make up my mind on buying a Winchester model 70 270 or the model 70 30-06. would like to have your guys input on this matter and see THF'rs opinions. Dont know wheather to get wood or the synthetic. Whats the advantages and disadvantages of both. Some of you have 270's and some have 30-06's. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

not much difference, just preference. Mine would be the .270

I have 10 Model 70's and have both a 270 Featherweight and a 30-06 Featherwight in both wood and synthetic stocks. For "pretty" I would get a wood stocked featherweight with good looking wood. For strictly a good hunting rifle I prefer synthetic and stainless. They can really take abuse and bad weather and don't show it as bad. You also don't have to be as careful with them.

I think the 270 and 06 are both excellent cartridges, I have killed several deer with both. For Texas deer hunting and even mule deer and elk I use my 270 most of the time. I have several larger calibers as well if I think I need more power.

My vote goes to the 270 or even better the 270WSM!!

You can't go wrong with either of those caliber's. I would go with the one you have the most experience with. I just checked out the model 70's on website and believe i would be prone to go with the extreme weather model.

30-06 for sure. The ballistics are better, imho, and there are more available loads. Besides, if you sight in your 30-06 with 150 grain bullets, and then realize you left them at home after driving 4 hours to a lease, I guarentee you can find a mom/pop hardware store that carrys 150 gr bullets for a .30-06. You may not be so lucky if you forget your .270 bullets.

With the newer excellent bullets we have now tsx's,accubonds, trophy bonded bear claws. And many more, there's no reason not to choose the 270. Flatter shooting a little less recoil to me more accurate. It will work for just about anything in this country. A nice lighter weight synthetic stocked rifle you can use anywhere blinds, hills, flat lands, wet weather.

Diggin all the info keep it coming. I am in the learning stages of rifles, calibers and what not. I am 31 and just now really getting into the hunting world. I am like a sponge right now. Soaking this up. Thanks guys!! smile And just for grins would anyone on here have a model 70 that they would like to sell? I have found one in wood and in good condition for $450. Is that a reasonable price?

What are you looking at using this rifle for primarily? Keep in mind optics are a very important decision as well.

whitetail, hogs, and wherever the hunting world would take me. ALSO this is my FIRST rifle I am looking to purchase. I have always just been a bird hunter and a bow hunter. I am clueless when it comes to optics. I see a price and go with what i can afford. I have no idea what those numbers mean. I just know the numbers has something to do with the power of the scope...i think.

Have you looked into getting an AR. They are great platforms for hunting, you can mount a variety of optics lights and so on. You can take multiple shots in the event you get on a group of pigs. And they are close to the same price of the model 70's you are looking at. I would look into getting one in a 308, and you should be good to go....it's something for you to look into.

About how much do you think I could get one for? I know there are diff makes and models. But where and what would be a good starting price?

A 270 and a 30/06 are pretty much classics in Texas. I have both of them and would only choose the 270 first because it is the first gun my dad bought for me back in the late 70's. This was back when JC Penny sold guns. Either will give you a life time of service. Most folks like the beauty of wood but the durability of plastic. For actual hunting I like the plastic because I never worry about denting it up while hunting. If I found a great price on one I would not pass it up for the other. $450 would be a good price if it comes with optics.

If you are set on getting new, i would say you could probably find one around $900-$1300 for the rifle. There are guys on here that have gun shops, they might chime in or even be able to fix you up with whatever you are looking for....

Man you stepped into a rat's nest of opinions with this one and no I'm not calling anyone a rat...... Anyway, I am a huge .270 fan although I've owned a 30.06 as well. My wife and I both shoot .270's. Mine is a SAKO L16R Finn made purchased new in '64. That rifle has killed almost every species of big game in North America and to be honest I have never felt that I didn't have enough bullet. .270's and .06's use the exact same casing, the .270 is simply "necked" down to accommodate the smaller circumference. They both shoot flat with good solid knock down power. That SAKO of mine still will group 3 shots in less than a 1/2 inch, and I honestly can't count the amount of shells that have been run through it. I trust it. I know I'm not answering your question, but for me it's a no brainier .270. I can argue the .270 has more "kill power" but, that's just my opinion for what it's worth. Have fun, they are both a good choice.

IMHO- This caliber question has, of course, been hashed, argued, debated, contested, disputed and dissected since 1925. No clear winner has ever emerged. In my 30 plus years of hunting in Texas, it has been my experience that the 270 is "the" classic Texas deer cartridge. I own two and have seen more 270's in Texas deer camps than all other cartridges combined. I also own a 30-06 and 300 Win Mag among others. Some have made valid arguments for owning both..... Both are spectacular for deer, though the RMEF surveys indicate (by a wide margin) the 30-06 is the most popular for Elk. Both have benefited from bullet and powder developments over the years. While I am a staunch fan of the 270, I think that the 30-06 does have a slight edge only in terms of versatility. If I was destined to be a "one rifle" guy I would probably pick the 30-06.... or maybe the 300 Win Mag.... but I am to looney to ever be a one rifle guy.

As for the Model 70, I prefer that it is NOT one of the push feed models and I prefer wood over plastic for aesthetic reasons. My current M70 resides in a Hogue overmolded stock, but will be wearing its original wood stock (Sunday Best) when it passes to my son.

You can't go wrong with either caliber choice, and believe me when I tell you; we have all been where you are now, this first rifle purchase will NOT be your last rifle purchase.

Good Luck!

better ballistics than the 270? i don't think so, maybe a very little more knockdown power with way heavier bullets? and i hunt down here in south texas where you don't have many stores close to your lease as you mention. but i think i have seen more 270 rounds lately than 30-06 at those small stores.

I love how passionate 270 guys are about their caliber.
I have a 30-06 and defintely don't love the calier like some of you guys do. I think that's great and probably says something about the caliber. I know a ton of guys who only shoot their 22lr and a 270 for pretty much anything.

I'd choose the .270 only because I use one myself and it's been all I've needed for deer and hogs. The Gibson's store there in Weatherford has some really good prices from time to time. You might check with them when you decide.

Well i ended up going with a Remington model 700 30-06. The Winchester Model 70 270 I was looking at was at about a 7.5 out 10. The Remington 30-06 is at a 9.5 out of 10. Only one small ding in the forestock. Clean inside and out. The overall condition of the gun inside and out was my deciding factor to go with the 30-06. So 30-06 THF'rs I may be needing some help and any advice on the 30-06 you can give me will be a big help. I know trial and error is the game but never hurts to have a little inside info before hand. smile Again thanks for all of your info and all of the comments on this topic. cheers
