There are numerous variations of buck grunts and vocalizations.

The most well-known is the "Grunt" which is a buck's non aggressive way of getting attention. The effectiveness will depend on the buck-to-doe ratio of the area and the stage of the rut. The "Tending Grunt" is a series of shorter grunts that a buck will make while he is trailing a doe that is in estrus as he tries to her to stop so he can breed her. One of the 8 pts we shot this weekend came cruising by the stand grunting like this in search of a doe that must have passed by before sun up.

Grunt - "Brruurppp"

Tending Grunt - "Brurp, Brurp, Brurp, Brurp, Brurp, Brurp"

There are a few other variations, including the Clicking Grunt and a Grunt-Snort-Wheeze.

They have videos that help with information on how to use the calls, when to make certain noises, and what time of year they work the best. Never watched them, but guess I should. Up to this point, I have tried to imitate the noises that I have heard.

Great info Redsnake. Those iPhone apps look interesting for a beginning hunter. May help me start to recognize the calls and appropriate times to use since I'm starting at ground zero.
