Maybe one day i'll be in that league

Heck that's nothing! Stumble on over to some of the "sniper" forums on the internet, there's people routinely making clean one shot kills at 1200 yards or more on deer, elk, you name it! They shoot across valleys, down mountains, across 20mph swirling cross winds - I tell you it is amazing! banana2

go to ebay and you can get a nikon buckmaster in 4x14x40 for $269! Those are excellent scopes for the price! The optics are great, even compare to some scopes worth double the price. The custom rifle builder out at West texas ordinace does his testing with a nikon buckmaster. The gunsmith loves them, he even carrys zeiss, leupold , swarovski's. he feels the nikons are good enough.

Now this is a really cheap setup, Savage Axis(formerly Edge) for $259, Centerpoint scope $70, the Weaver bases they sell at walmart for the Savage 110 supposedly work for the Axis $10, Leupold rings $20. A grand total of $386 after tax. The Centerpoint scope is good, of course not great by any means but if you hardly shoot then what does it really matter?

I wasn't saying this to be cocky, just stating that even my AR can shoot that distance without any hold over (25 yard zero, couple high at a hundred, dead on at 25o etc). I consider longe range when you have to start calculating your dope. I'm fairly new in the longe range world, but after seeing people compete (F5? think they call it) with open sights at Tiger Valley at 500-600 yards I changed my opinion. My best freind/ DSS gunsmith shoots to 1600 yards with his AI 300 WM. We were hunting in Nebraska last year and he took 2 different does cleanly at 600 yards.

This is the ammo I use in my AR's 75 OTM match

200 300 400 500
-1.50 1.90 0.00 -8.30 -24.10 -49.30

So even with an AR you basically need no holdover out to 300 especially if your zero is closer to 250 using the 25 meter zero. A 300 WM for example drops half of this, like 3 inches at 300.

Your exactly right, its down right amazing!! This is my best friends rifle that he uses to shoot to 1500 yards and beyond. Tiger valley just built a 60 foot tower that will allow some amazing shooting at over 1k yards, he is pumped. Has a sniper match there next weekend.

http://atwelltactical.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/cerakote-0201.jpg

Longe range is a truly expensive sport, handloading, etc. Hell the scope you see pictured is $3000 US optics. Stock is $1000, Sandstorm silencer $1000, barrel ........

This is his DPMS that he used to get 4 out 4 hits at 800 yards at NIGHT, at Tiger Valley's low light sniper shoot. (attached gen 3 MUM to it)

Not to hijack, but KP have you shot that gun yet since you picked it up from us?

If it shoots half as good as it looks your gonna be deadly.

Here's my .02 cents: In the last 7-10 years the gun makers have made some very good progress. If a man loads his own ammo and takes the time to develope good loads, then I am convinced that just about anything on the market will shoot MOA or better. Look at the HR Handi Rifles for example. Those are about as cheap as they come and shoot great with hand loads.

I think you can do this! Keep it up!

Im surprised that with what you said you want no one has suggested sporterizing an old mauser. I have done 2 one in 25-06 and one in .308 too. Both shot great could hit a 1ft x 1ft steel square at 750 yard on my old leases sundero. Where they sniper 1 inch group at 1k yards guns no. Did they both demolish a lot of hogs and exotics yes.

You don't have to spend the money on a name brand rifle to get great quality; and don't forget most modern rifles still borrow technology form the good ol mauser rifle. Even the original 8mm is a great round, my current pig gun is a bone stock Russian capture. Shoots great to 100yards after that I cant see with out a scope.

X2 on that! My stock Stevens 200 is great,I've worked up a load for it were I had all 3 shots of a three shot group touching, and that's a $200 rifle!

Now I'm not knocking an expensive rifle by any means and of course you get what you get what you pay for.

Dont know about that statement, the scope on the rifle left to me is cheap old 50 dollar scope and it puts groups size of a quarter at 200 yds.

I have found a couple I like, shouldn't be long. I got kind of burned out on this thread with the myriad machining "must do's" from the esteemed gentleman from Colorado. Sheesh, lighten up dude, I just want to do something for fun.

I don't think you can build one for 400.00 but if you buy a good used vanguard or howa rifle and restock it a get a timney trigger for it you can do it for close. I did it with a used vanguard action but used the barrel that came on it. I found a bell and carlson aluminum bed block stock on ebay and ordered the trigger from timney.
barreled action-280.00
stock-180.00
trigger-160.00

This gun is a 270 win and it shoots .58 groups on average and I have shoot antelope at 531 yards. To be honest I don't think you could buy a barrel better than what was on the gun, the stock did not need to be bedded because it had a plate in it and the real key to the gun is the timney trigger.
I have a lot of guns but this one was fun to do.

Also or you can wait until mid summer and Weatherby is going to have a new model Vanguard with a 2 stage trigger that will adjust to 2.5lbs, and have a sub moa guarantee for about 449.00 retail. I have a friend that saw it at a show this month.
