...in your blind or backpack when you're out hunting?

In my blind, it would have to be my portable toilet flush. That thing has saved my butt a few times (no pun intended). Next would be heater and coffee pot.

Cell phone, compass, and GPS. With these three, I go literally anywhere and get back safely. These are especially useful when it comes to tracking a wounded animal, even when you find yourself in even the most unknown area.

Two reasons - scouting and tracking wounded deer. I enjoy hunting the National Forest that borders our private tract. While I like to consider myself good at keeping a sense of direction when scouting the Forest for sign and places to setup a stand, the compass and GPS are true safety nets. The same is true when tracking a wounded animal. In addition to finding them on our own lease, I have close relationships with other hunters in the area, such that I often get called upon to help track wounded deer on neighboring leases that I never hunt. With little or no familiarity with these tracts, I can help track a deer and have no doubt that I will be able to get myself and others in the group back to where we want to be.

The cell phone is a must to let people know when you're not going to be back when they expect you.

Binos - aside from my rifle it's the next must-have item.

X2 for when fog sets in or low clouds after dark when you can not see the sky or moon at night or batteries start to fade on a flashlight. You can get turned around in familiar settings with your head down looking for sign. Not a great feeling when you look around and nothing looks familiar all at once.

Yes, with the technologies that hunters have available to them today, we have "peace of mind" like no hunters before us.
