My son called this morning from his grandfathers farm in East Texas. He said he was sitting in his deer stand on a power line right of way, when close to twenty big hogs came out of the woods and started eating corn he had put out the day before. He picked out the biggest of the bunch and dropped this big sow. He was excited to say the least.

He made a 140 yard shot to kill the hog. He and his buddy are going back this weekend for some more deer/hog hunting. He better go buy some more corn.

In time his deer hunting trips will turn into hog hunting trips and deer will turn into a byproduct of hog hunting.
He will also want a heavy caliber semi auto for multiple hog eradication shots.

Congrats and keep up the good work. There are plenty more where she came from.

Since no one answered your question, I will try based on my limited knowledge. Javelina's tend to live in arid or semi arid desert regions. They look similar to feral or wild hogs but the main diffference is in their size. The sow hog my son killed looked to weigh in excess of 200 pounds. I think a mature Javelina would weigh less than 100 pounds. In some areas of Texas (south and west), javelina and feral hogs share the same range.

Javelina is also a NATIVE Texas Species, that does not destroy anything in there sight as such it is regulated for Hunting with a season and bag limit.
Wild/Feral Hogs come from several strains of domesticated hogs and russian boars released into our part of the country, there one of the worst invasive species intruduced into Texas and the United states. They Wreak havoc on anything and everything, weather it be Damaging Crops, Hay fields, Grazing Pastures, overloading the ecosystem and pushing native species out. There a very hearty animal especaily if there Russin Boar Strain, they reproduce like crazy which makes eradication near impossible. They are a great example of how 1 introduced species can destry a ecosystem.
I would go as far to say, they will be the worst species ever introduced into our country. Far more than Fireants, Snake-Head Fish, and Neutria.

Javelinas are not hogs, the ones we have here in Texas are classified as collared peccary....I usually leave them alone unless they are really putting a dent in my corn supply.

I have never validated this but I was told that a Javi is in the same family as the Rat. Just a lot bigger.
