I heard that they had a good amounts of spring and summer rains, that increased green vegetation and insects (vital nutrients), that produced a good hatch of both pheasant and quail in the panhandle this year.

Bottom line, wild pheasant numbers are up this year.

Current weather forecast for opening day looks to be a very mild day for the cap rock of Texas in December. Dry(no surprise) with high into the 50's banana Preparing to pack starting today!

Last year up around Dalhart opening day was nice, about mid-50's if I remember. Then Sunday a front rolled in. I think on Monday it never got above 23 degrees. I remember eating at a small cafe in Cactus on Monday and the temperature was 23 degrees at 12:30pm.

walking It is something around 398 from my front door to the hotel I am staying at. I've made this drive several time now. It gets lonely between Roscoe and Slaton with Post as the only stop light between at midnight.

Heading up to FLoydada. Got about 10,000 acres of private land lined up to hunt on. One of the farmers had his cotton hailed out and he went back in and planted a couple of sections of corn. They stripped the corn, but the stalks are still standing and there's corn all over the ground. Supposed to be Pheasant Central right now.

Went to academy and picked up a new orange hat. They don't carry a lot of upland gear....

Randy T,

Stratford? We'll be there also Saturday and Sunday, hunting with the Stratford Education Foundation's hunt.

I've heard from some folks here in Justin who know some custom cutters that cut in Hansford county that they saw lots of birds this year.

I cannot freaking wait.

Hey flushem,

What's the best steakhouse in Dumas, that's where we'll be staying. I know as a kid, it was K-Bobs, are they still even open?

There is a new place called 287 Roadhouse that we ate at last year and it was very good. You can get steaks and a cold adult beverage there that are IMO the best in town! Also check out Albert's for breakfast. They usually have a ham and egg special that is great. Just be careful how much you eat at Alberts in the mornings because it makes it tuff trying to walk those 1st couple of fields. Who are you hunting with up there?

I seem to be detecting a lot of giddiness and child like behavior emanating from the pheasant hunting community...

Silver spurs and gold tequila
keep me hanging on.

thanks flushem. we'll definitely hit the steakhouse, pancake breakfast is provided on our hunt in stratford. we're hunting with the stratford education foundation. stratford has had that hunt put on by the lion's club for a long time, this is the first year i think for the the eduacation foundation. i lived in stratford as a kid, and used to hunt friend's land when i'd go up to visit. i haven't been up there to hunt in many years, absolutely can't wait!

Well, I'm about to fire myself and head out. Driving to the deer lease for an afternoon hunt, then up at 5:30 Saturday morning and driving the last 1.5 hours up to Floydada. Be there in time for some breakfast tamales and then we'll hit the CRP. Good luck to everyone!

CRP would be ASC office. (806) 983-2352 (806) 983-2352 ... Highway 70 East
Floydada, Texas 79235
You still need permission to trepass on private land

Fixed your Geography TB. Yes it was a good shoot. Out of 17 or 20 hunters we averaged 2 birds apiece on Sat. Sunday was as normal slower. Will have pics up Mon. sometime after I get some down time. yawn

Just wanted to stop by and say Hi real quick.

My dad and I are headed to Plainview this weekend for our annual hunting trip. Planning on hunting Thursday and Friday. Then, we're headed down to LaMesa to do a crane hunt with FowlPlayOutfitters (Zach/sandhill81) on Saturday.

It has been nice to search these forums and do some research. Thanks for the good info!
