Wanted to see if anyone has used buffalo bore ammo out of their pistol.I want to try it for hogs out of my Kimber 1911 45ACP. I have shot a few hogs with no problem but last season I shot a big hog on a river bottom, he took 6 rounds and kept going. Was using 230 gr golden sabers and don't think they were penetrating deep enough for such a large hog. Read a little bit about buffalo bore ammo for deep penetration and wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it. Thanks.

acp is jsut not going to get very good penetration. it'll penetrate plenty for head shots, and will likely penetrate deep enough to kill on a lung/heart shot, but on a decent size animal it probably won't pass through. just too big a bullet and not enough powder behind it.

the buffalo bore is high quality ammo, i've never shot any acp's though.

Long story here, but to sum it up.... due to very unusual circumstances, I was about 10 foot away from a hog that was about 80 to 100 lbs. I only had my Kimber 1911 in the very small Ultra size. I happened to have it loaded with 230 grain LRN handloads pushing mil-spec speeds. I turned around from behind a tree and was going for an ear hole shot. I hit him a little far back and got him in the neck. It initially appeared that I had missed as he ran away. However he ran a large circle and was coming back toward me. He was solid black and it was fairly dark out so I could not see any blood. I put a second round between the eyes as he came closer. It wasn't until I got a closer look at him on the ground that I found that the first round was a complete pass through on the neck. I think, had it been a hollow point, the expansion would have caused enough trauma to drop him quickly with the first round. The .45 ACP transfers a lot of energy very quickly, but as Erich stated, due to the speed, there will not be much penetration. You will need to choose your shot placement with that in mind.

I know the 45 acp is mostly knock down power, and not a ton of penetrating power. I have shot few hogs with the 230 golden sabers with good results, but this one hog was pretty much the size of a VW. With the average size hog I have had great results with my current setup, I just wanted some more penetration. I am going to try some FMJ's behind the shoulder here at the end of the month, I will let y'all know how it goes.

Shooting hogs is like shooting movie monsters or zombies. Unless you make the exact kill shot they just keep going.

the only .45 for hogs is the .45 colt and I use 300 grain Buffalo Bore cast bullets, the .45 acp is just not a hunting pistol, it will work I guess but not ideally.

You might consider looking into .460 Rowland conversions. It will certainly get the job done, though it may not be the most practical route.

It don't matter what you are shooting if you are trying to penetrate the shoulder plates on a large boar......


I killed a hog one night that had plates 3 inches thick.. Spine shot!!!!

I know it happens, but I've never had a hog fail to go down, and most of the ones I have taken were with a .223 55gr. FMJ. These weren't giant Russian boars, obviously, but the .223 isn't an ideal hog caliber, either. The last ten years most of the hogs I have taken with either a 5.5" .44 or a 10" T/C Contender .30-30. The Buffalo Bore posts some pretty impressive numbers; the 255gr. hard cast lead would be my preference. Look into DoubleTap, as well, it's cheaper than Buffalo Bore and has better performance. But, I think you would get more out of hunting hogs with another caliber that typically gets better penetration. Let us know your results, whichever direction you go.

44 mag will do the trick and have the speed for good penetration.

The main reason for the 45 ACP is that I have two 1911's and carry one all the time. I have alot of other cailbers that will get the job done but I like using my 1911's. Thanks to FRA I am now considering the 460 rowland. I am going hunting for a week starting Saturday so hopefully I will get to shoot some hogs with my 45. If I can get a decent size hog in one of our traps I will see if I can put one behind the shoulder and post the results. Thanks
