No, I do not recommend them. I prefer Tri-Tronics or Dogtra.

I know someone that has the 400 model and has work great for years. His is for stubborn dogs.

I have a sportdog. I have had it for 3 seasons and it has worked flawlessly. I would recommend them.

heard lots of horror stories about sportdog, but it seems they have cleaned up things the last year or so I've been hearing good reports.

Some of the bad things you hear about products on websites comes from shills. There was this one member on another who claimed to have owned every brand of e-collar, and that they were all junk, except the TriTronics. I looked at her profile, and part of it read advocate for TriTronics. I have a 10 year old Innotek, and it does fine for me. It has one feature which I've never seen on another e-collar, which is the hot button. You don't have to dial it up for trash breaking. You just hit the bottom button.

I'd give up my e-collar before I'd give up my Garmin Astro, but that's another thread.

We started off with a SportDog a few years ago. The first one we purchased couldn't hold a charge and didn't work past about 30 feet. We contacted customer service and they shipped us a new one ASAP....great customer service. The 2nd one we received wouldn't hold a charge and didn't work past 30 feet. Called customer service again and they shipped us another.....You can guess what happened next....so we sent back the third and got our money back. During this time period (about 3 - 4 years ago) the story I just told was pretty common among Sportdog users (atleast the people we talked to). We have used Dogtra since then and have not had a problem. I would suggest going with a Dogtra or Tritronics if your looking to buy a collar.

Having said that it is very possible that Sportdog fixed the issues they were having and might have a quality product now. If there is a Sportdog collar you like...try it out and see what you think.....if it doesn't work well call customer service and they will work with you. Or go with a brand that seems to have less issues...

I did quite a bit of research and talked to several people who had problems with sportdog and it was always one of the two things that phb said. To be fair I know a couple of people who have them and haven't had any troubles out of them but for a little more I went with the Tritronics.

Can't go wrong with Tritronics. I have a 6 dog G3 EXP and love it.
Being able to control a pack of hounds with one transmitter is too cool.

I had the 400S model and the difference between stimulation levels was too wide. The dog wouldn't feel it on a 1 but scream bloody murder on a 2. Also, the dial was too hard to turn with one hand. I also found out that you lost the functionality of one of the buttons if you expanded it to 2 dogs. I returned it and got my money back. That's why I don't like them.

I have one for Zeke and it works like a charm. I know there are good and bad no matter what brand, but customer service is great and the product is priced right for guys like me (i.e. broke).

I use a Sport Dog 1825 because it's programmable. I like to use the tone for recall and the vibrate for 'sit' or 'look' to get the dog's attention in the field. When pup looks at me, I can cast her. Beats the heck out of whistling or trying to holler over the elements or distance. Pup feels the vibration in the water, too - when audible signals may be drowned out, so I can still communicate clearly, in wind, water, etc. When training young pups, the vibrate is uncomfortable, so it's a good precursor to the 'zap'. Young pups will wear the collar at least a week and learn to respond to the vibrate, first. They can't help but sit to scratch at the 'itch' on their neck, which is PERFECT.... since 'sit' is the response I want for the vibrate! lol

I love mine and have had it for over 3 years. First one I had messed up and transmitter quit working returned it for new one and no problems since. Just bought my first battery for it this week

I have a sport dog 400 and have been using it on a near weekly basis while training my lab for hunting the river. This thing gets wet every time and I've never had her out of range of it. Plus the charge seems to last for a long time. I've had it on for 2 days and it worked fine.

You couldn't give me a SD collar. We were sponsored by them at Triple Crown for part of the time that I trained there. We semi frequently got collars that were on the same frequency and while Rody was training one dog, he was shocking the piss out of the one I was training for no reason.

They were good collars when they first came out but quickly got too big for their britches and with increased production came a drastic decrease in quality.

Zack, I've heard of this happening with other brands, too. There's a way to change the frequency on the collars, now. Don't know how long ago it was that you and Rody ran into that issue, but it seems they've got it resolved.
