not very much.

I have a 710 in 30-06 and I use the hell out of it in places where I wouldn't take a pretty rifle. It has taken lots of hogs and even paddled my jon boat. It has never let me down and shoots a tad better than MOA with remmy 180's, but I WOULD NOT BUY ONE. The trigger is pure crap, the bolt is about as slick and smooth as dry asphalt on a cold day, the scope only lasted a year - luckily that is one of the few replaceable components of the thing, and the thing is just plain ugly. YMMV, but there are much better guns for about the same price... A Savage or Stevens would be better out of the box, and could be built up your way if you choose to.

MOA huh........

I find it very hard to believe, that all these guys get one inch groups with these bargin basement rifles and factory ammo, not to mention cheapo scopes......when just a few years ago to get these results it took a tuned rifle and handloads to achieve this results.

my ruger shoots one inch groups with factory (hornady) ammo but it did take some work to get it there.

my friend bought a 710 in .270. was very impressed with the matel stock, I've seen smoother bolts on bathroom doors, the scope was fuzzy and the trigger was the heaviest i've ever seen

I shot the rifle about a dozen times and the best group i could get with factory remington 130 grain ammo was about 4 inches at 100 yards.

Should have tried 150's. My 710 .270 shot them just fine.

Does Remington make a good rifle? I have read that the 770 isn't very good, and now the 710. The reason I was asking, I seen 2 710, 7mm Mags in the classified section, wanted $225 for one, or $400 for both. one was brand new, the other only 20 rounds down the pipe. Thought that sounded like a heck of a deal.

I am looking for a cheap, but good rifle. I have heard good things about the Mossberg 100-ATR. thinking about the .270 model. I have never purchased a rifle before, i grew up only hunting with shotguns. and since i have been in the military, I have only been hunting once. That was last year up in Wyoming. Then I used my wife's uncles rifle. Any help you can give would be appricated. Looking to spend between $250-$350. Don't have to be pretty, I am sure it will get banged around. Thanks guys.

txtrophy, Why would you be surprised by anything these days shooting MOA? Even on crap guns like the 710 the barrels are built to better tolerances than just about anything produced a few decades ago. Manufacturing has made that happen, not gunsmiths. The bulk of the problems with the 710 are design not execution and I don't think a gunsmith would claim a 710. wink

My 30-06 710 really likes 180gr or better, 150's group about 2" and 165's are maybe a tad less. When I say it shoots MOA I mean with it completely sandbagged where the only variable is my touch on the trigger. I have never measured the trigger pull, but it is gritty like it has been in a sandbox and way heavier than my S&W 66 stroking double action. I shoot about 2 MOA with just a front rest or when leaning against a tree. Completely offhand I rarely do because that no amount of focus and training makes up for that trigger. My SKS which is lucky to pull 4MOA off the bench does better offhand.

For a 30-06 comparison my Browning loved the 150gr factory ammo straight out of the box, but if I spend the time and ammo to dial in the boss it will shoot just about anything. And I can shoot it to MOA or better with just a forward rest with me supporting the rear of the rifle. Unless I have to tinker with the scope or play with new ammo I never sandbag it.

HoffDawg, my buddy just picked up both a .308 and a .243 in Remington 700SPS for $519 each. He had the .308 out at the range today. I have not touched it and he is a new shooter, so the verdict is still out on how well it shoots. Might be more than you want to spend, and you would still need to mount a scope, but the price is fair to me for a much better rifle than the 710/770 (which are essentially the same)

I just sighted in a .243 770 for one of my brothers female friends. It came with the cheap scope. The trigger was not as bad as I though it was going to be. It was shooting right at 1" with power points at 100 once I got it sighted in. It's crude and bulky compared to my Kimbers, but what do you expect for three hundred bucks!! If you can get past the looks and bulkiness and find some ammo it like, many guns will shoot pretty decent!! Most rifle made these days are pretty easy to get to shoot 1" or less. It may take several boxes of different ammo, but it can be done most of the time!!

i hunted with a kid who had a 770 in .243, it was a big improvement over the 710 imo.

i would much rather have a savage 110 over a 710 or probably a 770.

this is thw worst gun Remington ever made, and it should be discontinued.
The savage or mossberg rifle is ten times the gun for the same price. Even Marlin has a better version.
and yes, I won over 20 Remington's and one 710, it is a trash gun, just my opinion, after hunting with them for 37 years.

I think the 710's are junk ! Try pulling the bolt back with your hand. Don't cheat and use a hammer now !!

Anyone can own a fancy gun but can you shoot it ?

Remington makes excellent rifles I own 3 and there all 700's and there great guns they had to make a low end gun we could pick up for $300 and under to compete with the savage and Stevens . And with my vtf 700 Remington 22-250 will shoot a .5 in group with ballistic tips and that's just a stock Remington with a trigger job

this aint the wild west you cant clean up the streets with a gun, but sometimes it is needed.....
got papers?

I traded a NEF handi rifle for a remington 710 in 243win.
to my surprize the 710 would shoot 1/2" groups at 85 yards with 80 grain blue box feds and 100 grain rem core lokts. wtf
I did replace the scope with a 4x12x40 bushnell banner and adjusted the trigger to about 3 lbs.
the ugly dog is one of the best shooters in my safe.

I was givin a 710 in 270 about 6 years ago for christmas. Mine shoots 1 inch groups at 100yds with 150 corelocks (i will post pictures when i get home). I dont need a hammer to slide the bolt allthough its not the smoothest action i have used. I did paint the stock black to get rid of that ugly grey. It has killed 3 deer so far and gets the job done. I also have a 700 adl in 30-06 with wood stock and i will be hunting with the 270 again this year because it hasn't failed me yet or givin me any problems.

I had one in .270 I bought cheap that's the only reason I bought it. It would shoot descent, I sold it a week later. I didn't like the color and the bolt was a pain in the - - - to deal with !!
