while purchasing a knife sharpener at academy today, i noticed that while browsing by the ammo section, they have started carrying barnes ammo loaded with TSX bullets.

for some reason, the .223 gets a 55 grain but the .22-250 gets a 53 grain.

anyhow, it got me thinking, alot of folks here are pretty high on shooting the TSX out of smaller calibers like the .22-250 and the .243.

I have experiance with barnes X bullets in larger (7mm and .30 cal) and AM NOT impressed with them on deer sized game, however, i hunt with my .22-250 alot, culling does and inferior bucks, and i'm always hesistant to take a body shot with my gun shooting the V-Max's. hasn't been a problem so far, but when the deer is a little further out, like 150-200 yards, a neck shot isn't an option for me.

accuracy is excellent with both gamekings and hornady, how is it with the TSX's? i know the X bullet was not known for its accuracy. also, how is the ammo quality produced by barnes?

I havent used them. There are so many loadings using the TSX, I sometimes wonder why Barnes decided to make their own.
When deciding whether a bullet is accurate, you need to shoot it in your gun and see how your barrel likes them. Shoot several 3 or 4 shot groups, allowing your barrel to cool between groups. Accuracy can be such an "individual" thing when it comes to guns. But you don't have to have one hole groups to shoot deer. You might have to sacrafice a little accuracy for bullet performance. Good luck.

Put the accuracy this way... Just shot my 257 the factory spire 100grain- grouped .5in and the 100 grain tsx's where .75 of an inch

my encore 25-06 will shoots hot loaded tsx's 3/4in and shots the partitions little over an inch.

My 243 is just under an inch with serria game kings and it about 1.5 with tsx's

you will be hard pressed to find a more accurate bullet then the Gameking, but if you give up .5in of accuracy are your really giving up that much.

I have found that they like clean barrels

I shoot deer with the vmax all the time and they work great.
My problem with vmax is the make huge holes in soft skinned varmints like cats and fox. I wonder if going with a harder deer bullet will be more fur and trophy predator friendly?

we shot a bobcat in sept and it wasn't that bad.

i shot a javi that same day at an angle, bullet hit just below the ear and failed to exit.

i shot a doe in the neck last dec. and it looked like a murder scene from friday the thirteenth.

i guess a lung shot with one would be okay....i've done it a few times with a 55 grain remmy soft point and it was a long tracking job

I get .5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards out of my .220 Swift using a max load of H380 with the 53 grain TSX. It has been my experience that the TSX's do not shoot well over another bullet's fouling, they tend to shoot best with max loads, and they are finicky about seating depth.

I have found this to be true will all of the non lead bullets. I have shot the original X-bullet, tsx's, hornady's GMX's and Nosler E-tips, and they all prefer a relatively clean barrel.

I got one raged hole groups with the 53 gr tsx in my 223, but never got exit wounds, I would suspect that with the increased velocity of the 22-250 you probably would get exits, but dont know.

Federal and I am sure some others also load barnes bullets, just got to look around.

MidwayUSA has the Federal showing available with the 50gr Bas TSX, cost 36.99 a box plus shipping.

I would think Barnes did their homework before getting into the ammo business. Nosler sure did with their line of ammo.

The reason for the lighter bullet in the 22-250 I would think has to do with many 22-250 rifles have a 1-14 twist rate which might not stabilise the longer bullet well. A Barnes X of anytype will be longer than a lead core bullet because copper is lighter than lead.

oh and thanks for the heads up on the ammo. I will stop in and see if the Academy close to me has this. A friend wants to borrow the 223 this weekend and might need more ammo than I have ready for it right now.

If I find some of the Barnes I will report on how it shoots

Here are two 62 grain TSX that I shot into a hog for testing purposes. Both bullets exited a 140 lb hog at about 20 yards. The are handloaded ammo.

This one opened to .444 from .223, around 2X expansion.

This one opened to .550 from .223. Over twice expansion. They both did pass through some bone, one went through one shoulder. Not sure which one went through the shoulder.

Yes both exited the hog. I put a 55 gallon drum of water behind the hog to catch the bullets.
