Let him go!!! Last year I had 8 spikes on camera. This year I have 2 that are definatly yearlings. Last year there were a lot of 2, 4 and 6 pt bucks, now there a lot of 6, 8 and 10 pts. At my house I have two fawns that just hit the ground about 2 mos ago. I'd bet the farm they will be spikes next year. However they will probably make 8 the year after. I believe, that the sooner some realize that once a spike, does not mean, always a spike, the sooner they will see the deer they have been looking for.

It depends on your management goals. HF or LF, large or small ranch? How many yearlings do you have? Do all the yearling look like this? For me I would cull him since bucks with less than 6 points as a yearling average only 20% of the age class for me over the last 3 yrs. If you want more just like him keep him if not then cull him. But without knowing your ranch or your goals hard for anyone to make a blanket call on your ranch only seeing one deer.

Thank you. We have more 8 pt yearlings than spikes anyways. So, any spike that doesn't fork on both sides gets shot. What would you rather have, a spike or an 8 pt yearling. So, it makes sense for all spikes to die, and the Kerr wildlife area has had an ongoing study for 30+ years that spikes won't be as big as 8 pts ever on average. To me, its easy to see that 8 pts will be bigger than spikes on average at every age class.

Not everyone is trying to raise the most mature deer possible. Killing the smallest of each age class is good population control.

and for the record the title says cull... cull as in a term used to help better the genetics or herd health... shooting deer like mentioned above is doing neither.

his deer he can shoot as many as his tags or MLD program allows, i could care less but thats not management and not culling.. That is shooting deer and filling the freeze, which IMO is to each his own and I have no problem with it but atleast call it what it is
