The cost for training a dog varies with how far you want the dog taken. Most trainers charge between $350 per month and up. ( I charge $350 and limit myself to 5 dogs) You are looking at normally two months of training. My phone number is 903/521-1330. I will be happy to help you any way that I can.

Training a pup for upland work is a little different. I have Labradors. Great dogs for the duck blind or upland work. But the training is the same no matter what breed. It all boils down to obedience training. Very important and many times over looked, good luck and enjoy your pup!

First advise.....buy a pup from a good breeding program, stay away from "line breeding."
Second thing you need to evaluate is the "puppy program" that is offered. Know what methods are going to be used. Too much "force training" at a early age can do more harm than good.
I train English Pointers and my philosophy is let a pup be a pup until about 5-6 months old. Up to this age is the time for the owner and pup to get to know each other.
Our puppy program runs $200-$250 per month for the first month after that it is $250-$300 plus birds. I usually keep the dog for a minimum of three-four months depending on the pup and what you are expecting to get after the training is complete.
I take two dogs total per year and my father can take up to four.
Talk to whomever you select and understand the program and let them know the duration you can afford and what your expectations are.
Good luck and let me know if I can be of help.

I need a bird dog bad and have no idea what to get. I think I want a german shorthair. Question: some people will not "play" with their working dogs....I don't want a dog that has to be treated differently at home. I also want a dog that is good with kids. What is a good choice besides a lab????.....and where can I buy one. Is it a bad idea to buy a trained dog??? should I raise it froma puppy first??

I had german shorthaired pointers for years. Some were pets as well as hunting dogs. I pretty much let the dog determine what kind of attention it needed. Some were satisfied with a pat on the head and some needed lots of attention. I went to Labs, I do a lot more duck hunting than quail hunting. I don't have kids so I can't answer the question about how they are around them. I typically dont let anyone else handle any of my dogs. Just had better luck that way. My uncle has some setters and he really likes them. They dont seem as hyper as his pointers. NoHeart and I are going to get a quail hunt together after deer season. Will have both pointers and setters. Be glad to have you along to hunt behind them and see their individual traits. If you can wait that long.LOL

We have 3 GSPs. They can be hyper at times, but they will settle down and be a family's best friend. IMO, best quail dog there is.
