Depends on what price range...

1. Sig
2. Glock
3. Smith M&P
4. Taurus 24/7
5. Bersa
6. Hi-Point
7. Louisville Slugger

There are many others, but in decreasing price ranges...

My first pistol was a G19 and man do I love it...the trigger pull on it is great in my opinion, and not hard to shoot at all. Then, I picked up a used XD40 a couple months ago, and now the Glock stays with the girlfriend...

Can't go wrong with either of these, I just like the trigger on the XD a tad bit more than the Glock

i dropped a 150lb pig with a single shot from a .40 s&w.....155 federal hydra-shok.

it will stop a pig it will stop a burgler or thief

The XD is an excellent Glock clone. I have yet to see the XD be adopted fully by a major law enforcement agency but I suppose it will be one day. Springfield Armory and all it's marketing prowess has had great success with the lowly Croat HS2000. The HS2000 used to be a sub $300 gun until Springfield put their name on it. They are indeed great guns. I prefer GLOCK but the XD would be a second choice in the polymer framed pistol market.

If you are looking for a cheap semi-auto that will go bang then look into the Hi-Points. They are super cheap and will not mind rolling around under the seat.

Whatever you get, be sure and spend enough time shooting it & getting used to every aspect of its function. For an inexperienced handgun shooter in a self-defense situation, my advice would be to buy a good quality revolver (Ruger or S&W) over a semi-auto, since the less you have to think about what you're doing in a panic situation, the more likely you are to come out on the better end of it. With a DA revolver, all you do is point & squeeze. No need to worry about whether one's in the pipe, whether a safety is disengaged, or anything else. With minimal care (keeping it clean) and practice, a DA revolver is a no-brainer to use. That's my opinion, and others will be different.

If you're really insistent upon a semi-auto, I'd recommend the Sig, Glock, or a 1911 (left in Condition 1). but as I said, whatever you get, get to know it really well. Practice with it until it is your friend.

On the cheap but functional side of things, ive got a Hi Point 9mm, with now 900 rounds fired, a mix of federal fmj and hornaday hollow points.

Never had an issue with mine and every successful range trip makes me more and more satisfied with my purchase.

Laterz,

Get a quality revolver in a light to moderate caliber.

I've been thinking about getting a Hi-point so I can have it in my car and leave it in the car. I currently dont travel with one cause I'm afraid of my car being broken into and my pistol being stolen.
