Looking at Academy sports at these 2 rifles. They both come with Scope, and shell cap of 4+1. Both come in .270 and 30.06. Leaning toward the .270. Would be hunting deer, and antelope mostly. What do you think, Rem or Moss?

Of the 2 mentioned Mossberg definitely, I'm a Rem fan just not of the 770 or 710!
No doubt about the AR crap, just damn shame hunters don't have self control and knowledge

Why not jump up an get the Weatherby synthtic for $399? Its way better, and costs less than $80-$100 more than the Mossy and the Rem.
The scopes that come on the mossy and Rem are $32 bushnells, not much money there. You could buy the same bushnell, put it on the Weatherby, and be way ahead for about $130ish more. Then later on down the road when you get the money you can upgrade scopes and have a great gun.
I know several months ago Academy had the 700's on sale for $350. Dont know if thats the case but its worth checking. You could have a way better setup in this case for less than $75 more.

I see the Weatherby also have a few more cals to choose from. I don't know much about rifle hunting. I have only used shotguns. So maybe I could ask this instead, What cal would be best for deer, lope, and hog? .270 25.06 30.06 or 7mm

I've been doing a lot of research and I've decided 7mm08 is what I'll be getting next. Short action (308 necked down to 7mm),less recoil than 270 or 30-06, 140 gr. has plenty of energy out to 400 yds. which is 100 yds further than I plan to shoot.

Oh, and neither one. Remington 700 is my recommendation. Academy in Fort Worth has ADL synthetic for $349.00

Like I said, I am new to hunting or even shooting a rifle, with the exception of my government issue m-4/m-16. I have shot a 30.06, and .270. I am really curious about the 25.06. my wife's uncle has a 7mm and loves it. so i am leaning more toward the 25.06 or 7mm. I plan on doing alot of hunting in Wyoming, which is where I am from, and I know they say the avg antelope shot is about 200-250 yards.

My wife shoots a 25-06 and loves it. The 7mm wil deliver more energy, on both the animal and your shoulder....LOL

If the Rem 770 is what you want, Cabela's has it on sale for $289 thru Nov 7. I would recommend the Marlin XL7 270. I've had it 2 years now and love it. I shoot 130 grain out of it.

Marlin XL7 in 270. It's the best value out there, The Rem 770's are garbage.

Hey I was in your very same situation not to long ago. Looking for guns for me and my son. I researched all the options, features and caliber sizes for the rifle and the scope options. I had a small budget as well, but needed 2 of everything. My final choice was the Marlin XL7 and I spent a few extra dollars and purchased the Nixon Prostaff 3 X 9 X 40. All and all I spent around $550 per gun. Rifle, scope, sling and plastic case. I really looked hard at the guns and the Marlin and it's pro style trigger (adjustable) and it had several great reviews and I believe it is 3-4 years in the market and made in the USA. I did hear over and over that I should spend a few extra dollars on the scope if I could swing it. 3 differnt shops had horror stories about the 770 so I stand away from it.
I love my Marlin XL7 and it shoots like a dream. Bang for the buck I went with the Marlin. Great review, great features and easy on the pocket book.

ive heard from just about everybody i talked to that rem 770 is junk and potentially dangerous. not heard much about mossberg atr. im gonna buy savage edge when next check comes in. $259 at cabelas, .243, perfect for most game in texas or north america if you can shoot. if i have a little extra cash them rem 700 or 700 sps is the way to go for rifle on the cheap....so i am told by shooters much more wise than me.

I like Savage rifles, but don't know much about the edge. The Stevens 200 is also another inexpensive rifle. The Rem 700 at Academy for $349 is a good deal. Gander mountain had a scoped package for $349 a couple of weeks ago. That one may have ended.

i have a .270 mossberg atr and i love it... one of those cheaper rifles you can take out in bad condtions and not worry to much about it. and mine is super super accurate. nailed a blackbuck at over 300 yards with it, and numerous other kills. always hit where i was aiming. gun has never skipped a beat and has been very reliable.... never had or shot a 770 but i haven't heard too many good things

I just as soon hunt with a spear as a 770.

Take the 770 off your list. They are complete crap. If you want a cheap gun get a Marlin, Savage or the Remington 700 ADL if you can find it for $349. You can get a Savage with scope at Walmart for $384. The scope is not the greatest but the gun will have a Accu-trigger and be a great shooter. I have no experience with the Mossberg but it would be way down on my personal list. The Savage Edge is really cheap but everyone I know say they shoot great.

i had an atr in 270 and hated it. the barrel would catch copper like flies on poo. if the barrel catches copper, the gun will not be accurate and you will be frustrated like i was. maybe i just got a lemon, who knows, but i did sell the gun for less than i bought it for and was happy not to own it anymore. i have a friend that has a savage 110 30-06 for sale. great shooting rifle.
I will get off in a little bit
