This is a crock. The original chili had beans. I'll take mine either way.

Negative...the orignal chili had no beans. As beef became more expensive beans where added.

Origins and history
Chili was first invented by the Spanish Canary Islanders, in the city of San Antonio, Texas, which they founded.[citation needed] The recipe used for American expeditions consisted of beans, dried beef, suet, dried chili peppers (usually chilipiquenes), and salt, which were pounded together and left to dry into bricks, which could then be boiled in pots on the trail.[citation needed]

The "San Antonio Chili Stand", in operation at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, helped people from other parts of the country taste and appreciate chili. San Antonio was a significant tourist destination and helped Texas-style chili con carne spread throughout the South and West.[1] Chili con carne is the official dish of the U.S. state of Texas as designated by the House Concurrent Resolution Number 18 of the 65th Texas Legislature during its regular session in 1977.[2]

Shows what you know wise acre. I was born and raised in Wharton, TX.I am 4th generation born in Texas.

I grew up adding ketchup to my chili because that is what my family did.

First time I saw cheese and onions with chili was at a good friend's bachelor party.

I was at a deer lessee's meeting and I saw cornbread and rice with chili for the first time. Along with ketchup, onions, cheese and hot sauce.

If you have to add hot sauce to your chili, I would say you didnt know how to make it in the first place.

I eat my chili without beans mostly, but when the leftovers get low, I'll add some to make another meal.

I eat cheese on it occasionally. Onions the same, ketchup usually, tried it with cornbread for the first time last night.

Rice sometimes.

I was just asking who liked what. I dont appreciate insults over bleeping chili.

[quote=twinbubba]Only a Yankee would put ketchup or beans in chili! barf

Just wanted to claify: I AIN'T NO DAMN YANKEE! Was born and raised south of I-20 and U.S. 82. However, I confess, not in Texas, but I been here 31 years so far. Did not know much about chili before I got here, nor had I discovered jalapenos or Tex-Mex. Texas has definantly improved my culinary experiences!

Best regards to all native and naturalized Texans!

Which grind do you guys use when you make your own chili? I use the coarse or chili grind, but am not against the hamburger grind. There was this guy on Dinners and dives last night who had won the Oklahoma chili chili cook off three times. He used the hamburger grind.

haha, Bill you old shark!

I like good sirloin for meat but I will use ground chuck or hamburger if I got it. Never ever drain the meat! Next day chili is the way to go. Terlingua is a great place to learn from the best. It's really hard to concentrate out there though.. cheers

Try making it with stew meat, don't grind it. Just cook it down til it falls apart, like carne guisada.

There are so many different variations of chili, because everybody has different likes and dislikes. Look at pizza, i like mine with pepperoni, hamburger, and mushrooms. I'm sure not all of you guy's like it this way. I like my chili to have beans, that is the way i like it. I like ground beef chili, and i use cheese and sour cream in it from time to time. Also use mustard, on chili dawgs. If you have good chili, and good beans to me it is a win win situation to mix them together and enjoy them at one sitting....

Beans in chili is a down right shame and there ought to be a law against it.

I like mine spicy with jalapenos saltines will do but corn bread is better.

I don't put beans in my chili, but I'll still eat it if it has beans

BTW - got a bowl of chili at the Chili's in Lewisville about a month ago & they put sour cream on it. (I normally eat at the Flower Mound Chili's and they just do the cheese & onions there).

Anyway, if you hit the Chili's in Lewisville - tell them to hold the sour cream. It ruined a good bowl of chili

Well, chili is stew. Chili Con Carne would indicate it does not have beans, but mostly it just says it has meat.

When I make chili, it depends on the mood I am, but the only beans I would use are dark red kidney beans. Sometimes I eat them with potatoes, baked or smashed, but hardly ever with rice.

Wise man in deed.

As the reigning Camp Craig Allen Chili Cook-off Champ... I can atest to the fact that beans are not allowed in a Texas Chili Cook-Off, except as a side dish.

And no.. I won't share my recipe. lizard

Sirrah is right there should be a law against this. The law should read that if it's got beans it can't be called chili because as all the true Texans know if it's got beans it IS NOT chili and anyone that thinks it's ok to put beans in chili is a communist.

Hard to believe mexicans came up with this and no beans were included.

I eat chili with beans, without beans, but always with japs and onions

It's not in the chili, per say, just put a big spoon full in your bowl and the ladle the chili over it. Stir it in and have at it.

I do it to make the chili go further if I have a short batch.

And I still dont understand why people have to be stupid here and call people names over a pot of chili.

Like beans or no beans. Leave the names off.

Personally I see no purpose in eating jalapenos with chili. That is what God invented cayenne for!!!!!!!!!!!!!
