I'm gonna say we must be the exception to the rule on this one. We are just starting out and trying to build solid reputation and clientel. We found it extremely difficult to book hunts at $2500 plus without a history even though we had the quality and number of animals that other ranches have. We regrouped and started offering day hunts with harvest fees and are slowly building our reputation. However, all of our hunts are guided to be certain we do not adversely affect our herd. I think Longleaf is the exception to the rule. Most day hunt operations that I've seen shoot any and everything that moves, breathes, has hair or bone. Thanks for doing right, Longleaf.
Those slaughter shop day leases should be illegal or at least heavily regulated.

Yep, you get what you pay for in pretty much everything. Day lease operations are cheap for a reason.

I tried The Martinez Ranch In Uvalde and was impressed. I found the ad on craigslist for a doe hunt and booked one for my girlfriend. She had been shooting her .243 all summer long. That was their first year doing it and we had fun. I took a hog off their ranch and a doe but my gf missed her doe. The lasy day when i took my doe my gf slept in, after the kill, the guide Waylon, drove around the ranch and showed me some brutes they had. We saw at least 10 shooter bucks that weekend but i am on a student budget and i did want to walk back home.Ive tried calling to set one up this year but the number is no longer in service and the banner on their ranch is down..
I also tried one in san angelo, i think it was 7 mile, but it was shot out, we could see the guys in the other blind without binos. the 2 days we were there we saw a buck at first light the first day and on the second day we saw 2 does before shooting light.
we had a better time in Uvalde and it was cheaper..
Nothin teaches you to be a better shot than tracking the ones you barely hit..

Do your homework. Ask questions till the outfitter/land owners ears bleed. Ask for references, pictures ect. Success rates, lodging, ect. You may find a 100 dollar a doe rate, but there may be no lodging, no water, no walk in ect and then your out another 200 for the stay. Some packages seem really nice on the outside, but when broken down, are really not that great a deal. Know what you want and see what they offer. If it's usually too good to be true, then your more then likely gonna get ripped off, imo. There are alot of fly by nite places, the ones that are in it for the long haul are honest and have returning hunters. Best of luck.

I had a day lease in Lano one time and it was nice, decent stands and saw a few deer. Went back the next year and they put us on a different part of the property. The stands were torn up and very rickidy, squecked everytime you moved. The brushes covered the feeders and you would never see what was there.
Thanks, Jigfish
