I don't have a youth but a friend of mine asked me a question. I went to TPWD web site but still unsure. It states about taking does but nothing about bucks. Can a youth shoot either or just does? I know all rules will still apply about special antler restrictions if he can take a buck.

From my understanding if the youth has not taken the Hunter safety class the the youth has to be with a legal licensed hunter. The youth has to abide by the same laws. the youth can shoot either sex, and the AR rule are also in affect.
Some please correct me if I am wrong
Steve

This is what I see. Nothing about being with an adult with the youth. The 13 year old took the Hunters Safety Course last weekend and purchased a licence. He will be hunting with his dad reguardless because he is only 13 and needs guidence.
Special Youth-Only Season: Early open season: October 30-31, 2010. Late open season: January 3-16, 2011.
Bag limits, provision for the take of antlerless deer, and special requirements of the county, shall be as specified for the first 2 days of the general open season.
Licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger may hunt deer by any lawful means during this season.

the youth can shoot whatever the county allows. If the season opens with doe days the youth can kill a doe..if in the county you must have a permit to kill does, the youth must also use a permit.

I noticed that Smith County said the during Youth only weekend the youth could kill does but during the regular season Thanksgiving weekend is the only time does can be taken. I called the GW and he said that youth could not kill does on youth weekend. I told him they can according to the booklet. He said he would call me back in a few minutes. When he called back he said I was right, there are 12 counties this year that can take does youth weekend that could not last year. I know that is not the OP's question, but I though anyone reading this might want to know that.

Whatever you can shoot during bow season your youth can shoot with a gun. In Leon county you can only shoot does during bow season and the 4 days at Thanksgiving. But my daughter can legally shoot a doe with a gun on that weekend. Just follow the rules of your county for that weekend and you will be fine.

I just got a new bow sent in. And I called up at Smithfields to price out accessories. They let me know this weekend is Youth weekend. Does that means no go for the new bow this weekend? : )
I'm not familiar with the laws on Youth weekend. Not to mention my friend was planning to go out with his Dad this weekend on their deer lease...but he's 23 he's no kid. Is that allowed?
I'd like to be educated on this manner.
Thanks guys!
Also I saw yall mention an AR rule...excuse my ignorance but what are the limitations on that platform in hunting?
