How would you tag a hybrid deer? I know the same topics get brought up over and over, but I'm just curious.

First how do you determine its a hybrid in the field?. If you shoot one you think is a hybrid then you should consult with a GW for confirmation. A lot of leople think they see or shoot hybrids when they really dont.
I have never seen a live hybrid but I did get to compare trasal glands of true WT's, MD, and hybrids in college. You have to have a lot of time to do that on the hoof.
Good Luck. My $.02

After I shot what I thought was a cross I had a GW in Matador tell me that if it has a black tail then it's a mulie. That was his rule about 5 years ago. Don't know if it's the same now, but we would run into crosses fairly often and had a lot of wt's and mulies on the lease.

I shot a HUGE doe in Foard County a couple of years ago, looked all WT except size; several said it was a hybrid, including processor there that sees a ton; GW said maybe but doubted it. Said next time they would like a tissue sample...

X2
If it had a black tail it is a MD if it had a white tail it is a WT. If there are any different color tails I am not aware. So if you have a situation like that I am intersted.

Do you remember that big buck that Danny shot in Crockett county?
It had Whitetail antlers, but had a small black tail. He must have tagged it with a WT tag because, as I recall, it was not mule deer season.

No it was during mule deer season and he did put his mule deer tag on it. He never questioned the deer until we looked at it at camp. That is when you and I did point out the WTD rack on a MD body. It was a great big body with a black tail but it had typical WTD rack that was a main frame 8 pt.

You mean like this? Just shoot it no tag required.

My dad shot one a couple years back that had the body of a WT but it's horns were just like a MD's but WT sized. Sucker had a huge body on him too, it was definately a cool deer.
