Hey guys I was looking for a forum on food plots and didn't find anything so I wanna get some tips on a food plot. I have a 50'x125 food plot plowed at my house. I'm picking up 2 apple and 2 pear trees tomorrow to plant. I had the plot disced with a big tractor and need help on what to plant. The ranch next to me has winter oats and rhye! I tried a blend from walmart out at the ranch and a few clovers grew so I don want to waste my money again? So Any help or a place to grab it would be great the bonus is I can water this food plot with no cows!!!! So the only thing that will be eating is deer ( big ones if I can get them to jump the fence :-)

Getting a late start, but might still get some use by December is you can get water on it. If the neighbors have oats and rye, I'd try something a little different, such as triticale or wheat.

Good luck.

I know it's late but I figured I could play catch up since I can water as much as needed
Any other seed? Does cabelas have anything worth the drive

just go to a feed store and pick up some winter peas and oats.. cheaper, and ive had better luck with it than the high dollar premixed stuff form cabelas or walmart.

Go to you local feed store and buy you a bag of wheat or oats and buy a pound or two of turnips since you are late getting it in. Can you water it all? It seems a little early to me for planting trees you are planting. Make sure you protect them from the deer. They love to rub their horns on apple trees.

You should get a persimmon tree or two. Deer LOVE persimmons.

leave out winter peas on that small of a plot. I would go straight oats or alfalfa. If you can really water it then alfalfa would probably be best.

I wouldnt water once a day, that may be too much. Id water 2-3 times a week max. Good luck and keep us posted. The deer will love those turnips come late December.

Be careful with the watering, especially the trees. It would be better to only water once a week, and water deeply when you do. Trees need to receive a good soaking, in order for the roots to grow deeper into the ground as opposed to staying along the top.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will keep everyone posted and I think FOOD PLOTS would be a gret forum topic. With the prices of corn, protien, blocks etc. Food pits would be a great tool for all us texans that own some land.
