I'm usually by myself hunting during bow season since none of my fellow lease members are bow hunters and Sunday morning I speared a nice 3.5yr cull buck. He left a good blood trial for about 60 or so yards then couldn't pick the trial up again. I know it's not unusual to lose a deer like that but it still is upsetting. Anyways, my question what is the best dog to use to track blood trials? I would love to use my Heeler but don't know if she is the best breed for the job. Thanks

Blood hound would be the best. I wouldn't own one though.

I've always heard Jack Russell Terriers and Wire-haired Dachshunds make great tracking animals that double as good pets and "lap-dogs" in the off-season. Until you get your tracking dog up and running, though, get a spray-bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Spray it around the area where the trail "ends" and any little tiny droplet of blood that you can't even see will foam up and you can pick up the trail again.

Don't own one but they say the Lacy is an outstanding trail dog for lost deer. My neighbor has one and says he has never lost a wounded deer on his property since he got the Lacy.

I use Lacy-Catahoula cross dogs. My brother uses a Blackmouth cur. They work well for us. They handle better than a terrier. I prefer them because they are bred to trail and bay. Any good cattle/hog bred cur has the potential to make a blood tracking dog. Blood-tracker has some Blackmouth pups due that are out of a good tracking dog.
The more I see of the people's representatives, the more I like my dogs.

Check out United Blood Trackers to see some different dogs that are used for tracking and a few right ups about the different breeds. Also for those in need of a tracking dog, UBT has a list of members that track. Just click on the state you want, to see if there are any trackers in your area. http://www.unitedbloodtrackers.org/index...=3&Itemid=6
