We have a lease that is mostly like bottom land. We set up feeders, barrels on tripods, and within 2 weeks we have mud pits under the feeder from deer and hogs. The mud lasted all year until now. So I'm trying to figure out what to put under the stand to make the ground more solid. We have no tractor and when wet you have to walk or use a 4 wheeler to haul things. Any ideas out there?

I took a peace of hog pannel and put under some of my feeders that arent inside a feed pen . I let two of the feeder legs hold it in place , keeps the hogs from rooting big holes under feeder.

paving stones maybe. Not sure hogs wouldn't mess with them though.

Thanks men, I might have to put the hog panels up. If nothing else it would give the mud a chance to dry out. I had thought about some kind of cinder block pads but it would take too many to be cost effective.

Maybe try putting a couple sheets of plywood under them and frame it with 2x4s. That way the won't be directly on the ground

I use the big rubber mats that Tractor Supply sells... I think they are 4'x 6'. They work great and the deer and hogs can eat the corn without getting dirt in their teeth. Ha Ha

I would not want to eat a deer/hog after it has been eating lime covered corn.

I have used a few bags of landscape lava rock mixed with some of the no float mulch. It works for a while but eventually they will have that packed down or moved around.

I figured I wasn't the only one with this problem. We were thinking about throwing a few bags of sackcrete in the hole but I would want it to set up before anything fed and I can't be sure of that. We only have a few deer and I don't want to kill them, not that way anyhow. Guess I'll head to Home Depot and see what looks feasable. Thanks for the ideas.

Got my card out of my camera and have a group of 12 hogs in the mud under the feeder almost daily. The deer seem to stay on the perimeter of the corn anyway so I guess the mud stays a while. Saturday night is going to be pork night at the lease. My son and nephew will open up with the AR's. I'll have to watch since as of Tuesday I have a plaster cast on my right arm from my thumb to my elbow. It should be off by the 6th though.

We had this problem at one of our leases, we just got a couple bags of mortar and mixed it into gravel and it has worked very well.

I dont know what it would do if you mixed it into the dirt, may be worth a try, mortar aint that much. Somone around you is lible to have a tractor you could bum or get them to help you out, a case of beer and some gas money will go a long way sometimes. I would try the mortar either way thought.
