I bowhunt north of college station and decided last year i wanted to put a small plot out for the deer and hogs. I used that plot that u dont need to till all you do is scatter it and rake over it. It grew pretty well but the deer and hogs didnt really like it since its still out there uneaten. Got any tips on planting a plot without a till that the deer might like better?

what was it that you planted. i hunted in huntsville for a while, which is not to far from you. we planted oats every year and while they came up fine, the deer really did't want to eat it. in south texas it is a different story. can't keep them away from the oats. experiment with different stuff until you find one you like. imo, unless you are planting a plot that is at least 1 or 2 acres, you are pissing in the wind. either it won't be a big enough draw to attract alot of deer or it will be something they will go crazy for and they will eat it all up in a week.

i am a firm believer that if you either don't have the means or enough land to make a different sized plot, then stick to something that you can put out by hand or use in a feeder to give you a possible edge

The land im hunting is only 160 acres and the plot i put out last year was around a bow stand of mine across a creek. There is no way i could have gotten a till back there which is why i used the no till plot. I forgot what the name was but u can buy it at academy for $10. Where in huntsville did u hunt?

we had one place just outside of riverside, and onther 15 miles north west of huntville. we leased both at the same time, but the riverside place was alot of hardwoods. much better place for deer hunting.

i would look into a soybean/mix to use in a feeder. a buck who is drawn down from the rut is going to go looking for something good to fill his gut with. plots are a good way to actually feed deer with,as oppossed to just draw them in, if you are able to have a sizable plot.

totally different region but i can back up txtrophy comment on soybean mix..2 years ago i killed the biggest buck of my hunting life over a feeder that was throwing half roasted soy beans/half corn. It was post rut and we had never seen this deer before.we were hunting a small 400 acre improved grass farm with a small pasture on it. the deer was big bodied but looked like a gutted snowbird from runnin does...anyways , there was a great wheat field about a half mile from this feeder that he could have been frequenting but he came to the soy mix...he scored 155 and some change and the extra 2 dollars a bag was worth it because i put the buck in a big buck contest and won it...1000 dollar prize...if i could figure out how to post a pic i would...soy bean/mix...good idea

Ive been hunting 20 miles NW of Huntsville for 20 years. I use plain ole race horse oats and throw in a couple sacks of rye grass, deer tear them up.

That's what my plots look like and then they die off. I don't know why but now i'm putting a lot of money into my bow plots. I've put down 300 lbs. of lime and 100 lbs. of fertilizer for about a .5 acre plot. I'm hoping to go out at the end of the month and check out my summer plots.

oats may be your best bet, you can get a 50 pound bag (56 lbs) depending on how they sell it for about $8 or less

some of the fancy marketing they have is way over priced, oats are easy to get up
