They are both great rounds for wtd. The advantage that the 30-06 has is that you can buy factory loads from 55 to 220 grains. The 270 can't even come close to the versatility of the 30-06. Both very reliable. I will always shoot my 30-06 because of the amount of different ammunition available to me.

i doubt you will be able to tell the difference at any distance. they are both very adequate centerfire calibers. both are relatively flat calibers. just because one or the other might be slightly flatter than the other with certain loads really makes no difference. you're going to sight the rifle for the distance you expect to shoot, so you'll be aiming true on likely no matter what.

well you opened up a can of worms didnt you. This is a never ending argument. here is my OPINION- they are two of the most reliable calibers in the modern rifle era. In north america they will take down just about anything you would put your cross hairs on. Just put some practice in at the range and neither one will let you down...

30-06 has a wider variety of bullet weights, other than that there is not alot of difference in their performance at 150.

I doubt the deer shot with .270's or .30-06's can tell much difference between the two. Dead is dead. Choose the one that you're most confident with and then sling some lead.

I do own both, but i hunt with my .270 more often. I use a 130 gr silvertip, and it does the job well. When i first got the gun, i shot a west Texas mule deer at just over 400 yards. Dropped him where he stood.

Pretty much flip a coin, though if you decide to use the .270 & 130s I'd be a bit more careful about shooting shoulders depending on what bullet you choose. (Grenade or TSX..) i've shot close to about two dozen mature bucks thru both shoulders with a .270 and hornady interlocks weighing 130 grains. never had a problem, that bullet will blow thru them. a .270 and the 130 grain bullet go together like apple pie and ice cream, they are a perfect match for each other. the 30-06 is a great round as well, but i think the versatility aspect of it (can shoot bullets from 55 grains-220 grain) is a bit over touted. about 90% of guys shoot 150 grains and nothing else the whole life of the gun. I would't heisitate to shoot an elk with my .270 either, using a hornady interlock
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I switch from 150s to 180s in the '06, in my rifle the 150s shoot 2" higher, so it's no biggy to do so as long as I remember it. But I've never gotten away from the 130s in the 270.

Doesn't matter. Take both and shoot one with each.... What he said!

1-shot kill rates with each:
.270: 96.435% .30-06: 17.2%
The .270 is clearly superior.

I think the shooter makes a much bigger diference than the gun itself. I hunt in the brush and very rarely have to take a shot over 150 yards. I use a .223, .243, 30-30, .270, and a blackpowder, whatever I decide to pull out each morning. They have all done well at dropping the deer right where they stood when called upon. I shoot everything in the neck so the caliber of the gun matters less than if you shoot them in the shoulder. I would say use the one you are comfortable with.

If you shoot a deer with a .270 it's dead, but if you shoot it with a 30-06 it's more dead. Now, if you want it REALLY dead, get yourself a magnum caliber like 7MM Mag or 300 Mag. Anything under a .270 and it's just barely dead.

there lies the solution.....get a 300wm that's easy on the shoulder & a tack driver and the debate over 270vs30-06 won't come up near as much.....just sayin'

.30-06, will say it is much more important the ammo you use and the scope you invest it.

at 150 yds it don't too much matter which one you use without going into the tech stuff and just for hunting, shoot the one you like, THAT is the best one. your not doing competition shooting so shoot what you enjoy either gun is going to kill anything native to Texas

If that is the case them are pretty good tastin' barely dead deer I have been eating for 45 yrs.

Either one will do just fine for deer out to 150 yards. If you have got a .270 already, then by all means use and enjoy it. If you are going to buy one, go with a .30-06!
