IMO it seems like trap would be the closest to quail hunting behind pointers. what do you shoot for practice on quail? i shoot skeet way better than trap though. cant figure that out. how about you

My local range offers 5 stand and trap. I usually shoot trap every Friday night, because I think it's closer to what I see in the field. The five stand (ours, at least) has too many shots that I would rarely see quail hunting. I haven't tried sporting clays, but it's pretty popular around here.

I shoot skeet and clays and occasionally trap. Like you say, trap is probably better practice for quail but it seems to me overall accuracy with passing shots fills a bag quicker.

Sporting clay shooting only. Been shooting sporting clays for about 10 years. Totally quit trap and skeet when I went to sporting clays. Sporting clays is absolutely the closest thing to actual bird hunting available. The "eye on the bird" technique used for sporting clays is the best for natural hunting of dove or quail. Google "osp shooting technique" and do some reading. I would put a master class sporting clays shooter up against a top skeet or trap shooter in a quail shooting competition any day. I assure you, 90% of the time the sporting clays shooter will win.

I am an avid sporting clays shooter (1-2 times per month) and it will make you a better shot in ALL TYPES of flying shots, quail, dove, ducks, teal... and like bluesman says, it hones "eye/hand/bird" reactions and really helps with those difficult (fast passing or arcing lead type) shots. There are even rabbits to shoot. IMO, participating in all types of shotgun games will add something to your bag, but SC by far will make you a better all around shot.

I shoot skeet and trap. The combination of those two seem to get skills where I need them for the field. I have not shot sporting clays or 5-stand, but want to give them a try. The more angles you can practice, the better.

Skeet. Occasionally sporting clays. Wobble trap when I want to be frustrated.

I have shot some skeet, but not much, never anything else, I should make time & go.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Sporting clays . Where we go they change the course every month.

If you guys are really looking to hone your skills, try the international sports. Skeet and trap. Look up the rules, faster birds, harder targets, low gun, random delay from point of call, 24 gram max load. Things that make it a very interesting game.
For sporting clays in my opinion Elm Fork (Dallas) & either Garwood shooting sports, or Hill Country Shooting sports (Kerrville) are some of the best facilities in the state.

I will take advantage of whatever shooting game I can. The more I shoot the better I get. I'm not a natural shooter. I have to practice to just be average in the field.

I live in Kerrville, shoot at Hill Country regularly. Hill Country is also the only civilian qualified Olympic shooting range in the Country.

I shot competitions in College and I think that trap is the best thing for quail hunters; sporting clays is fun but alot of the shots are unlikely to happen in the field. Though I do think it makes you a better wingshooter especially when it comes to water fowl and you dont know whats gonna happen next.
