Where is a good place to buy winches w/brake for winch up feeders. Was told Tractor Supply has them rated at 1500 lbs.w/ brake for 74.00 and then you have to buy cable stainless or galvinize.Any other places with better prices?

I get mine through Northen tool they are made by Dutton Lawson and are rated at 800 lbs. But you have to pay freight and it takes about 5 days. Grainger also has them and I use them for most of my hardware. Make sure you size the pulley to the wire rope you use also otherwise the cable will groove the pulley or ware a flat spot on the wire. I use 3/16 because it is easy to find both. you may find the wire rope with hook at academy or a boat store. I hope this helps and you will never regret using a brake winch.

Northern Tool. About $20. I don't need no stinkin' brake. My feeder hold 330 lbs. But I do haave a double pulley(one moving pulley) so that makes it a 2:1 ratio(only FEELS like 165 lbs). Comes w/cable. Got the hook from TSC.

If you have your mind set on a brake winch I agree with BHolt on the Dutton, http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/p...-Product%20Page

That said the most you will have in a full barrel is 400 and that is pushing it. A typical 55g will hold 5.5 - 6.5 bags putting it right at 325+/-.

This is the style that we use and have not had any issues what so ever:

Anybody ever tried using a come-along instead of a brake winch, a lot less money and just as safe if not more so. The come-along may be a little slower but it is a lot easier specially for old men.

If you are just looking for cheap, quick and easy a chain hoist is the way to go. About $35 at Harbor Freight. This is what I use when I suspect that the whole thing will be stolen anyway.
