Anybody know how to build a cheap tripod feeder? I know you can get them for around $100 but I don't really have the money at the moment so thought I would see if I could maybe buy a motor/spinner and build one.
If anybody has any ideas on how to build one that would be great. The area I will put it doesn't have a good tree to hang a hang-on feeder...so needs to be a tripod type.
Lemme know if you have any ideas on what to use and how to do it. And for what it's worth, no hogs or cows will be in the area I will put it in so it doesn't have to be super strong. Thanks!

Buy you a motor and an aluminum trash can and drill the necessary holes. Buy you some steel legs and mount them on the can. Good to go. Cost you around $70.

Thanks ECO.
Does anybody know if PVC gravity feeders work (if they are painted camo). Does the rain sour the corn and ruin it? How long does it take deer to get used to it? Wouldn't want to scare them away since the season has already started and I am hunting. But seems like it could be a really cheap feeder.

Not a tripod feeder, guess you could mount to a tripod. Just take a 5 gallon bucket, cut a 4" tall and 6" wide hole right on the side at the bottom of the bucket, bolt an 8" piece of 1/2" hole hardware cloth (screen) over it, fill with corn and hang where ever you want. Deer will brush against hardware cloth and knock corn out onto ground so they can eat it. Can build one for less than $10.00. cm

Wouldn't want to scare them away since the season has already started and I am hunting. But seems like it could be a really cheap feeder. They do not have to be painted, the deer will eat out of white PVC pipe. The corn will be eaten fast enough that very rarely have I had any sour because it got wet. But in your case I think I would just scatter corn on the ground every day for a few days, the deer will find ot and soon expect corn to be there. Just means that you have to drive or walk the are you use as a shooting area. Which can cause problems, but our deer are used to pickups in the pastures and they kind of ignore them.

X 2 on the Remmington feeders. By the time you buy parts you will spend just as much. I have some that are 4 years old still spinning fine.
1 bag of corn will last about 3 days if you put it in a 1/4 barrel. Protien blocks or alfalfa bales even longer.

Thanks for all the advice. I appreciate it!
I did put out a bag of corn on the ground when I set up the stand. Was a week before I hunted it and it was cleaned out. The bad thing is I can't go put corn out like that without the guy I know there. But, I guess as often as I can would be better than nothing till I figure out a feeder.
That's a good idea on putting some type of block out there as well. What would you guys recommend for that?

If you want to get by REALLY CHEAP, you can do what my dad used to do years and years ago. He'd use old one-gallon paint cans. He'd cut 4 or 5 holes about an inch in diameter on the sides near the base of the can. He'd fill the cans with corn, put the lids on and hang them on limbs about 3-4 feet from the ground. He'd hang a half dozen or so cans out. The deer would lick the corn out of the cans. Anyway, that was his theory. Also, he always had access to friends and relatives where he could get ear corn, and he'd hang ears of corn with wire all around his shooting area. Sounds pretty primitive doesn't it? Well, he was an old-timer and it seemed to work fairly well for him. He had his own way of doing things.

I have 4 PVC feeders set out in different spots. 2 per spot. No need to paint them. We usually use these for places that don't already have a permanent feeder set up, where there's some activity we're not hunting. Basically, set them up where you see activity, and set up a brush blind or pop-up.
The only problem I've had with them, is once the deer find them, the corn is gone in about 2 days. They are each 4 feet tall and hold about a bag to a bag and a half. We'll dump corn in them and on the ground around them on Friday night when we get there, and hunt them for a few days. You'd be surprised how often the deer keep coming back to the empty feeders to check them. Same as corning roads, etc. They are very cheap, very easy and very mobile.
If you have a bunch of turkey, they'll clean them out in one sitting. Hogs will tear them up, so try to hang them or strap them to a tree off the ground.
All that said, it would be cheaper in the long run to build a permanent feeder with a timer. You'll spend more on corn in self feeders through the season, than you would in a feeder with timer.
We have less than $100 in each of our tripod feeders. The cost is in the timers. Pick a cheap one with a photocell and you should get out for $50-75.

2 liter cola bottles keep the corn dry and the deer or hogs can kick and stomp them till they get the corn out. Crude but effective. Please remove them from the woods when finished for the season.

Take a 5 gal. bucket (metal keeps the squirrels out but plastic will work) drill or cut a hole in the bottom then hang a piece of pvc that is approx. 1/4 inch smaller than the hole so that it extends about 16-18" below the bottom of the bucket and about 12" up in the bucket. The deer will bump the pvc with their noses and a few kernels will fall out. They will learn quickly how to get the corn out and a 5 gal. bucket will hold almost 50 lbs. You will need a lid for the bucket to keep rain and varmits out. You can make a tripod out of 3 oak saplings or what ever is handy to hang it from. Place the pvc that extends out of the bucket about 5' high to keep hogs and varmits out of the picture.

Olathe KS, lived in Louisburg for a while before mving back here. With everything they have to eat in KS you dont need a feeder.

Watch bass pro, they will put the trophy rock on sale pretty soon. I think it's less than 10 bucks when they do.
