Growing up I used a Marlin youth model, single shot, bolt .22 Although I had lots of fun hunting with it, I eventually grew out of it and bought a Marlin Semi .22 After Some hard times I sold my little 'Squirrel Hopper', as I called it, and set aside my passion for squirrel hunting. My 'new' toy is an old Rossi pump action .22 loaded with CCI 29 Grain Lead tip .22 shorts. Not only are they accurate for my 100 yards or less shots, but they are whisper quiet!
What is your favorite Squirrel Gun/ammo?

Marlin 25MN 22Mag Bolt action with Winchester Hollow Points. I have it topped off with an old Redfield Tracker 3-9x40 scope, that I took off my deer rifle a few years ago when I upgraded scopes. It is a head shootin' son of a gun. Head shots equal no lost meat unless you like squirrel brains and eggs. I no likey the aforementioned delicousy, so head shots are all I take. BASSHAWK

I completely agree with the head shots. I will never forget cracking a tooth on pellet left over from a 410, not a fond memory I can assure you! Any favorite recipes to share? I have quite a few recipes in my collection if anyone is interested in trying a different style or variation.

Well let's see. Tomorrow morning I will be shooting my 10/22 Deluxe with a 22 mag fixed 4. My son will have a Marlin 39 with a fixed 4. Other son will have his Remington single who 20 and my wife will have a youth 870 in 20. I guess my favorite would have been a Fox Savage SxS in 16 I sold a couple years ago to buy something else I don't even remember. East Texas cat squirrels are quick and are hard to hit with a 22. Now a big old fox squirrel offer the best chance for a head shot.
It ain't easy being me.

Anchutz model 1450 with a redfield golden 5 star 2x7. Anything other than a head shot is a miss

Any .22 is what I prefer for squirrels and rabbits. But I have used: 410 ga, 20 ga, and 12 ga shotguns for squirrel too. Have not been since I was a kid. Wish I had a place to go and take the kids around Denton.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Marlin Model 81 handed down from my Dad. Bullhorn iron sights. Still deadly accurate after 70 years.
Thank you dear Lord for equipping me with incisors.

I use a shotgun to back up my kids who use 10/22's, but growing up I used my grandfather's winny model 67 that lived behind the truck seat. My dad let me borrow it to start my kids off when my kids were little. He made me give it back because even with glossy worn iron sights it will make tight little clover leaf after tight little clover leaf at 50yrds. My scoped 10/22's can't touch it. My wife bought me a beat up old heavy barrel 61 thinking she would curb my coveting of that old ugly gun. It shoots silver dollars not dimes, but most importantly it was not grandpa's.
Oh we were talking squirrels and squirrel guns... wish I could've had any gun with me this morning for all the tree rats in my tree and raising hell in the leaves.

single shot 410 or my 20 guage SxS.
I swing through squirrels and shoot them on the run. I love picking off a squirrel running on the ground or when he's jumping from tree to tree. That's why I've never cared for hunting with a 22 and waiting for a still shot.

Nothing helps me more to prepare for deer season than chasing after cat sqirrels with a .22 rifle and scope. The gun that I prefer most often is the same one I took yesterday morning, a Remington 597. It's probably one of the cheaper .22's, with a lightweight, plastic stock and rough trigger. However, that's all the more reason to practice with it. If you can repeatedly take out a one-inch target with such poor performance, hitting a three-inch target area using a more high-quality (and heavier) centerfire will more likely be a piece of cake.

I use a Browning A5 12 ga early in in the season when there are a lot of leaves on the trees. In late winter when I can see them better I use a Ruger 10/22.

Ruger Mark II 22 pistol. I used to carry it with me deer hunting in East Texas so I could hunt lunch on the mile and a half walk back to camp every morning. That pistol fed many a hunter with pots of squirrel and dumplings.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.
