Walking a fine line. I would think it would be officer discretion.
You can hunt hogs with rifle anytime you want.

It is unlawful to be in possession of a firearm while hunting with a broadhead HUNTING point
during the Archery-Only season, except a person licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas may carry a concealed handgun.

Your good.

If you are hunting in an area likely to have whitetails, I'd give the local Game Warden a call to notify him when and where you were hog hunting. It is legal to hunt hogs on private property anytime (with landowners permission), but the courtesy call could cut down on any misunderstandings.

If two hunters are going hunting on the same ranch, and one wants to hunt deer with a bow, and the other wants to hunt hogs with a gun, you had better have only one gun and one bow if you get checked.

Two people, two bows and a gun....Not good!

Two people, one bow and one gun....Good!

One hunter, one bow and no long gun, pistol OK if you have a CHL.
One hunter, one gun and no bow, but you better not be deer hunting!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

If you are goin to hog hunt with a Rifle you better not have a bow with you. If you are bow hunting you better not have a rifle or any other long gun with you. You can have a Handgun but you have to have your CHL.. If you have a long gun with you you better leave it in your truck..

so like any area in texas.... is that what ur saying lol???

And yes, perfectly legal. In fact, u could walk around bow hunting for hogs and carry ur rifle with u... thats also legal... just cant go hunting for deer and carry both.

We had this discussion last year, it ended with an email to TPWD....

If you have a CHL can the landowner still override and keep you from carrying handgun in the field during bowseason?

It was me that asked for a clarification last year. Here was my question to TPWD and the reply.

----------------------------------

Comment or Question:

I would like y'all to settle a debate and it might keep someone

from getting in trouble.

The thought is that if your hog hunting during archery season

you can be packing a rifle also. He says it is just if your

deer hunting in archery season you can't have both in

possession at the same time. He states he can carry a rifle AND

a bow if only used for hog hunting during archery deer season if

you have no intention of hunting deer. He is wanted a rifle

along for hogs just in case they are out of his bow range.

But it is my understanding you can not have both a rifle and

bow with broadhead point in your possession while hunting

during archery season and does not matter if your only hunting

hogs. In camp or vehicle, or pistol with CHL ok, but otherwise

while hunting. Even if only hunting hogs, he can still only

have only one or the other outside of camp.

Who is correct in this instance?

Thank you,

John

It is unlawful to hunt deer or turkey during an archery-only season
while in possession of a firearm. Exceptions: a CHL holder may carry a
concealed handgun, or a firearm may be possessed in camp or in a
vehicle.

It is legal to carry a bow and a firearm to hunt hogs at any time during
the year.

His land, his rules. Also note the wording is "concealed handgun", meaning your handgun also has to be concealed. Your CHL does not allow you to carry it as a sidearm while hunting.

Someone already posted up a 223 1/8 with a 30-06 in the Los Cazadores. They don't wait around down there.

I would say that this question is now answered.

Oh and to give credit or a touche' again. It was Brandon A that was correct in our debate over this rule. The response from TPWD was not what I expected and proved my original take on it to be wrong.

You can bow hunt anything, but deer and carry a rifle. However, if you have any intention on hunting deer during archery season for deer you better leave the rifle at home. Cause if if the GW comes around you won't be happy.

If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.
