Thermasmell works good on bugs but puts out smoke that i can smell so im sure the deer can. Been busted a couple of times using it and gonna try the scent free off this year.

The Thermacell seems to work for me in the blind.

I have ran thermocells with the deer literally under my bow stand. I'm sure they can smell it, but it doesn't seem to bother them.
it has to be better to have that smell, than sit there waving your arms around the entire time you're on the stand.

The inventor of the Thermocell should be a Nobel Prize winner.

The inventor of the Thermocell should be a Nobel Prize winner. I lost my faith in the nobel prize after their last pick, but I do love me some thermocell.

I may have mentioned this before-but there is another advantage to the Thermacells.... If you get the sheath/holster that they sell to cover the thermacell, you can actually put it under your clothes when it is COLD, and it will keep you warm as well as keep the bugs away. I put mine right up against my skin one morning under my clothing and it kept me toastly while I sat in my climber in the freezing wind.. So you know where my vote goes.
A hog is nothing more than a bullet receptacle.

I prefer Thermacell to anything else I've ever tried for skeeters.

I used a thermocell for the first time, it took 2 of them to keep the mosquitos off of us in a pop up blind with no wind, I guess first impressions are lasting because I doubt I will use it again, besides I agree with the smell also, to me it stunk so I am sure the deer can smell it as well. Might as well use off at least the mosquitos will not bug me.

da, if you don't mind me asking, why would you never use earth scented refills again? the smell they put off is way to strong for me, i will keep using the thermacell but with the regular refills instead of the earth scented.

tworod Was it a new pad that you was using? I used mine last bow season in my blind and the skeeters were trying to get out of the windows as soon as it warmed up. I had to unzip the windows so they could get out. Just saying that if the pad has been used before they don't work well unless you seal them in a bag after using it.

Thermacell for sure, but as someone pointed out to me during early Teal season, need cutter around those areas chiggers like to go.
Don't know or want to test thermacell against chiggers.

I agree whole-heartedly with the Nobel Prize for the inventor. Gotta say that I was upset when Thermacell came along because I was working on something for hunters to combat mosquitos at the time. Had to go and get one to see how effective they really are and I was amazed. Sure, you can smell them, but I've been in a ground blind with the wind blowing straight at deer that were less than 30 yards away and they never even looked my way.
I do second the earth scented pads discussion however. Way too strong and, at least to me, they smell nothing like fresh earth. Also, on the two occassions when I used them, I never saw a deer. Could just be coincidence, but why chance it?

I own a Thermacell and have also been very pleased with it. However, common sense tells me it's useless if there is any amount of wind to blow the scent away. For that reason, I'll use a very limited amount of Off when hunting open stands when there is enough wind to make the Thermacell less effective.

Thermacell really works. The downside to it............maybe its me, but I still smell "butane/gas" when it first ignites. May not be a problem with a rifle hunter, but for a bowhunter. It seems to go away pretty quick though. Off works, but is messy and smelly imo.

Sometimes I wonder if it will get to the point you bring an attorney with you out hunting.
