I got one for my oldest son on his 8th birthday and have spent time with him teaching him how you use and care for it. We have not had any issues with him having a knife and no injuries.... yet. Now my second son is turning 8 in a few weeks and is asking for the same thing. He and his older brother are very different from one another, to say the least. I have advised the second that it is not an issue of age but of maturity and responsiblity. At this point, he will not be receiving a knife yet.

Sounds like your Ag teachers and mine were cut from the same cloth...

i recieved a swiss army knife for my 6th birthday. one of the ones with the magnifying glasses, a saw, fish scaler, two blades, a corkscrew and two screwdrivers.

i rode my bike to walmart when i was 10, bought a 4 or 6 inch (can't remember) schrade lock back knife, paid 20 dollars for it and walked out the store. don't know if thats legal anymore or not.

had that knife for along time, never cut myself with it seriously, but did get a few nicks. when i was 22 i sliced the end of my thumb off skinning a deer, so age isn't a factor, maturity would take top priority

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I think I was about 10 or 11. Cut the crap out of my finger the first day I had it. But then again I've cut myself with just about every knife I've owned. Wife and kids gave me a custom knife from Big Tony and I hope I never cut myself with that.

I'm a HS teacher and I don't think I can carry a pen knife at school.

I graduated HS in 96 and I always had my rifle and shotguns and sometimes a pistol in my car on fridays because I drove to the ranch immediately after school...

Sometimes I had my shotgun during the week with me because I would go shoot skeet etc...

I never took them out... Why?

Can't imagine what they would try to do to me now... I had a RIFLE in my senior picture!! hehe

I got my first knife when I was 7, but not by my dad's choosing. There was a display of them at the drugstore checkout and I picked one up and promptly cut myself significantly. Still have a scar. My dad embarrassingly bought the knife because it was covered in my blood.

When we got home, he put it in a drawer in the workshop and told me it was mine, but I couldn't use it unless he was around.

I dont remember not carrying one. The first was a cheap one blade (if you could call it a "blade") red swiss army. That thin was about as sharp as Paris Hilton. It burnes me up that we punish and regulate the masses because of a few misfits. The ideas and rules that our kids are subjected to and forced to follow will weaken or country more that 20 years of obama.

He realized he had it, and told the teacher himself that he had accidentaly brought it to school, because he didn't want to get in trouble. The teacher told him it was ok, thanked him for telling her, and told him to take it to the office and explain to the principal what happened, thinking that the principal would just keep the knife until that afternoon when I picked him up. The principal suspended him for 3 days, said it didn't matter that he told them when he realized what he did, still zero tolerance. I understood and wasn't mad, but it was still a bad deal.

In some cases zero tolerance is a bad policy. It takes our ability to judge things on a case by case basis away. Zero tolerance policies are often put in place by people to ignorant or lazy to use their own head when making decisions.

I think it's important to teach our children how to use tools, care for them and be responsible for them. So, does your child need a tool..say a pocket knife? Does he have to open up boxes or cut twine? If so, teach him. If the purpose is just to have one, then I'm opposed to him carrying one. Would you let him carry around a hammer, just because he wanted to carry one?

When I in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade I went to a small country school in Louisiana. This was the early to mid 90's. In our student hand book there was a section that stated pocket knives were allowed as long as the blade was under three inches. Also, every year before hunting season started, the principle would make a announcement asking everyone to please keep there guns behind there seats and out of sight. We did hunters ed in AG class, including shooting skeet behind the baseball field. God I miss living in the country!!!

My boy is eight and he messes w knifes all the time w my assistance especially at the Studio with his stuff while I'm teaching him how to skin things out. But on a daily basis not yet just sometimes kids will be kids and a knife can be as dangerous as anything else I've caught him trying to cut the wrong way to many times not thinking of consequences if it slips.

my son had to have a knife like dad when he was 3 or 4. I bought him a spyderco trainer so he had a real knife with a pocket clip but did not have to worry about him getting cut. He always thought it was as sharp as mine!!

It all depends where you grew up. In the South or in the country, you learn to respect things early (God, mom, guns, knives) and usually a parent is around to watch you. If you have to ask, your kid isn't ready.

As for carrying to school, I think that should be a school decision, but the lawyers have it screwed up... when we were in HS in the early eighties, we got swats from the Ag teachers over pocket knives.... if we didn't have one or if it was dull or dirty...

Man you sound like RW with that last sentence...

We have to take em if we see em now. When I was in school, we got a butt chewing if we didn't have em and have em sharp. It was expected...

I got my first when I was about 5, if I remember correctly. And I did stab my brother with it, but he deserved it...

My boy is 7 and my girl 9. They get a knife when they kill their first deer. Until then, no.

i was about 10-11 and i had to buy it myself.
my oldest never wanted a knife and to this day doesn't carry one, but when we when we're fishing or hunting he always ask to borrow mine.(i always ask him if he is sure we are from the same gene pool)
i'm kinda of a knife nut and i don't like to lend anybody my knife. i carry 2 at all times, one to work with, but still sharp and the other is my good knife, razor sharp assisted opener, just in case.
my younger son is like me he has at least one with him at all times and is always looking at the new knives.

It all depends on the maturity and responsibility level of the kid(s). If the kid(s) display the type of maturity and responsibility that goes along with having and even carrying a knife then yes, otherwise, NO. And as far as taking a knife to school..... Heck NO, they would be expelled from school, fined (and the parents) and possible be locked into a juvenile detention center because of all the wacked out kids these days going to school with guns and stuff and committing horrible crimes!!!My sons will get one when I see they are fit to be able to have one, not until then, same as a rifle!!!

I was 5, seriously, when dad gave me my first single blade cheapo knife. I remember he rounded the point off for me with a grinder. Good times. Weird, that was 24 years ago but I remember it like yesterday.
