What part of Kansas? My Grandpa goes there every year for a little Pheasant hunting. Im going in January. We always hunt around Dodge City. Hope you get to go, nothing like a great Pheasant hunt.

I options are open. I will have a rental car so I can drive anywhere.
Are certain areas in the state better than other?

Ive only ever hunted around Dodge City, but have great luck there. I've never hunted public land, all private. My grandpa has hookups with the locals.
The way we hunted was hit and go the smaller fields. He has a GSP and we would go the fields that were an acre or less, work it, get a bird or two and hit the next one. He had enough spots where we can hunt a few hours a day for half a week and not rehit the same spots. We never limited out or anything in one spot, but its fun watching a dog work and getting a few birds with not that much time involved. Very casual approach.
Oh and btw, if your a rabbit hunter, you can clean out on them around there. Back in the day when I was a young teeney booper, we hunted this one spot where a house had collapsed, and no lie, our beagle couldn't keep up with how many rabbits there were. At least 50 in the one spot. That was a sight to see!

Greg, try this. It's a link to the KS dept of wildlife upland bird report. It breaks the state down into 5 regions and describes the upland survey's done earlier in the year. http://www.kdwp.state.ks.us/news/Hunting/Upland-Birds/Upland-Bird-Regional-ForecastAlso, there's a ton of public land that the state leases from ranchers and farmers. Generally speaking, the western 2/3 of KS has the best pheasant population. Access to this land is included with your out of state license which is around $80. You can download a copy of the atlas here: http://kdwp.state.ks.us/news/KDWP-Info/L...l-Hunting-Atlas
I would agree with you, but then I would be wrong too.
