Do people have to charge for every inch over....whatever you set.

I have seen

$10 for every inch over 150
$12.50 for every inch over ???
$5.00 for every inch over ???

What gives.....can't you just set a price and if a guy gets lucky live with it......

Guy I guided for has gone to that. He has invested a lot of money over the years supplementing the deer on his leases. At his regular prices for a 4 day hunt he was booked solid every deer season with the exception normally being Thanksgiving Day and for a few days before Christmas. Then folks started showing up in the afternoon on Turkey Day for a hunt starting the next day.

He got greedy and went to the pay per inch bit and now he's lost a lot of customers and friends.

You could see the positive impact the feeding had and the average age of deer taken, but the "program" became god and it went downhill from there.

Short answer: Plain old fashion greed.

edit I can score pretty good on the hoof, but I wouldn't wanna tell a guy he was shooting a 148 and have it turn out to be a 151. But, I think they are betting that once the customer (notice I didn't use the word hunter) sees the "big" boy he'll bite and take the deer. Like I said GREED.

I have noticed this concept as well. I don't think its fair to a hunter that is already gambling on an expensive hunt.
Just list a price and be done; quit trying to hit a homerun.
If you are a real "outfitter" and not a land pimp and have put the time in ; you should know what quality of animals are on the property anyways. You determined this in two ways, 1. spending alot of time there or 2. Recent pictures with recent harvest.
These "outfitters" describe these 170" deer etc but have no proof unless they steal a picture from someone else.

I for one will not deal with an outfitter. I lease from a land owner or not at all. To me outfitters are just middlemen and drive up the cost for everyone. That's just my .02 cents worth.

I have seen this more too, seems like the deck in kind of stacked against a hunter in this circumstance.

It's more like $100/inch over X score. Typically goes up by the thousands as you pass various intervals of 10.

Borrowed from Eland Slayer's thread in Open Hunting:

Can anyone tell me what the price is on any mature buck?

http://www.envirecon.com/hunts.htm

For the record, I have no issues with a guy trying to make a dollar. That's the beauty of capitalism and a free market system and if I do not want to do business with him, I won't. Frankly, in some situations, if it were not for an outfitter, the given hunting opportunity may not even exist.

That's fine here, but if you ever go out of state, a outfitter can come in handy.
I hunt with one in Ks. Already have stands in place, but lets me bring a couple of my own. BUT, a hunter can shoot whatever he wants as long as it's 140 or better with no additional cost. If he ever starts "paying by the inch" once it gets to xxx# score, then I will no longer be huntin with him.

Depends on your definition...

Most of the land we manage, would not be available at all. Our niche is dealing with landowners that are fed up with hunters abusing the privilege.

I do think the measurement side of it is absurd. It started in the exotic market, bled into whitetails. But with the QDMA/TTH/MINEISBIGGERTHANYOURS of todays world, it's here to stay.

We are outfitters, in my mind, providing a service to both hunters and landowners. In every case over the last 12 years, our prices are at or below what the landowner was charging prior to use handling his problems for him.

Not all outfitters are the same. I'd hope you'd all be careful with that big wide brush. Are there unscrupulousbastages that take money with little work, yes, but some of us work for a living.

Exactly the point I meant to convey with the second half of my post.

It just wears me that people do that......that's why I won't and refuse to hunt with someone that does that....

Your right...149 or 151 there is a big difference in price with some places....

Just set the hunt up for a fee and move on.
That's why I hunted with LSTO and Trent all those times....Trent was straight up on that not all management bucks were the same but the price was the same.

I like a straight up landowner (outfitter) whatever, whoever is in charge that says....if you shoot this deer it's this price.

No matter what.....
