I was told that yellow labs tend to be bigger dogs and choc. tend to be smaller. I am looking for a smaller type.

I don't know if that is true, I have seen some pretty big chocolates. I have a buddy with a pretty small black lab female though.

Once you go black you never go back.

I've never heard of that. I know folks with Chocolate and Yellow and both are about the same size. In fact, the Chocolate may weigh more.

You may want to consider getting a British Lab female. A female lab will typically weigh less, and the British lab is supposed to be smaller then the American lab.

RGC has a british lab that weighs around 40lbs.

Yeah...that is total BS. It kills me the rumors that are spread around about different colors. They are all labs and if you get a good one it will be good regardless of color. Get what you want just make sure it is a good one. Some time and money now can save you both later.

It all depends on the breeding. Has nothing to do with color. I've seen little black labs and big black labs, chocolates and yellows the same way. All different shapes and sizes. And Judd said it. Spend some time looking for the right dog, spend a little money on it, and you'll save both of them later.

and yes, the choc is heavier, but she is about to be 4 yrs old compared to the 1yr yeller pup.

RGC's lab is NOT 40lbs, that sucker was pushing high 70s for a bit, until he started working her again trout

I'm pretty sure it depends on whether it's an American lab or English. The English labs are bigger/bulkier.

To me honest with you, there is really no "English" or "British" vs "American" lab. There are Show bred labs and Field bred labs.
Show bred labs are the squatier, bulkier, block head, short otter tailed dogs. Field bred dogs are the taller, longer, more pointed nose dogs like most people have today. So unless the dog actually came from England, it's probably has some show bred lines in it.

The majority of the field bred dogs could not compete in shows because they usually don't meet the "standard" on build and appearance.

I'm not trying to be rude, just informative.

I'm not trying to debate anyone. I just feel you can't have to much info when looking for a new dog.

Great info. Those dogs really did come from England. You can tell by the titles on the the boy's page.

This is another good site with viable info.

X2. I even know a very good breeder that believes the choclates are the least intelligent of the three. They can all be big or small. British labs are smaller.

The truth is, all colors can show up in the same litter. As has been said, a lab is a lab is a lab. As far as color goes.

What matters is, are you looking for a show dog, or a field dog. One that is too laid back may not make a Grand National Champion in field trials.
