I’m an avid hunter, but completely new to bowhunting and am in need of advice on a good *affordable* bow setup for a beginner. I’ve seen some “package” bows on Bass Pro and Academy’s websites and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on a good “starter” bow setup that will get the job done? Should I buy a package setup or buy everything piece by piece? Does anywhere in the DFW area sell used bows? Thoughts on brand? I’d like to keep it under $500, lower if possible. I apologize if this is a common question, but any help would be greatly appreciated!

Na, any question is a good question. you will get better answers from other but thought I would put my pennies worth. You can buy very good bow, all set up for under $500. The rest and sites might now be what you want. What are you planning on doing with the bow. Hunting, 3D. Don't do what I did and just shoot one bow and buy it. You need to shoot all the different makes of bows. You can look at the classfied here and find some good deals. Just make sure you know your draw length.

Thanks, Jigfish

Agree with the above. I don't know the area you live in, but am certain there is a bow shop not too far from you. At the price you want to be in, I would definetly look at a good quality used bow, set up with quality attachments.

UTmallard, I live in the DFW area and I have had really great expriences at the Bass Pro in Grapevine. The guys there are all avid bow hunters and very helpful. They have spents hours with me and my buddy even when we were not buying anything. They have a nice 3d range and will let you shoot any bow they have. The Red Head bows are made by Diamond and are a pretty good deal. Just my 2 cents.

you can get a diamond at academy for 399 with all the things you need to get started, add the release, arrows, tips and broadheads and you will be a little over 500

I too will be hunting for the first time this year with a bow and have decided to purchase a RTH (Ready To Hunt) package from Bear Archery.
