need help with a winchester m12

ive got a pre war m12 in 16g, i can pul the bolt/slide back after closing it without pulling the trigger or hitting the slide release. the gun is in good shape and nothing looks wore out when i pull it apart. any ideas as to the cause or what i should look at

Replace the slide release.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Being the type gun you have find a GOOD gunsmith. Those 16s are slowly disappearing. I love mine as a bird killer. So far the only issue is fired shells will hang up in the smaller than average ejection port when I am in a big hurry. Good luck
