Do you guys have any ideas on how to kill a free roaming mountain lion? A friend of mine has one that he has seen twice and is afraid for his kids. Other than dogs tracking him, is it just luck to see one? Thanks

takes a bit of luck. a mountain lions home range is something like 70 square miles. they never stay in one area of that for very long according to what ive seen. you could always try calling or trapping

What do you use to call or what do you put in the trap? I have read they don't eat already dead stuff.

They eat already dead things. I've seen them caught in a hog trap baited with a deer carcass. A predator call will call one in but a shot in the dark.

Generally they are pretty afraid of people, unless they have cubs and/or are in a compromising position. I'd let tpwd know just because I think they track sightings. If it's near civilization, i'd let the city/county know.

I have seen little fake furry varmints that emit an electronic predator call on ebay. (Might get alot of coyotes though.) I also remember that photographers caught up with a hymalaya snow leopard by putting up one of those $39.00 motion activated deer picture takers so that they could anticipate where and when the animal passes the spot. A pile of rabbit manure or rabbit bedding (if you know of somebody who raises rabbits) might also attract them and get them to paw into a particular spot.

When we lived in Comstock Tx, ranchers always had to kill a cougar or two to save a few of there sheep and angora goats.
Ranchers would put a older angora goat on a tire below the rimrocks for a couple of weeks. An older angora will cryout more than an old ewe. A mountain lion isn't going anywhere as long as they have easy meals.
We know theres a female cat that has lived in the Big Bend State Park for years, she's missing part of her paw and a dew claw, my brother speculated maybe a steel trap, who knows, a snake bite?
She's there in the spring for sure, she hunts the mares in foal and the mexican cattle that are grazing along the Rio Grande river. Mexican vaqueros push there cattle and horses up and down the river for the early spring grasses.
There are even feral and javelina hogs and mule deer. No reason a mountain lion has venture far living in the National or State Park.

I did mention to him about maybe getting a goat and put it out there. Sounds terrible but it would be cheap

I've used my girlfriends chihuahua before.. tie it up and let it howl. Just gotta make sure you get the kill shot before it gets the dog...
OK... I haven't really done this... but I think about it a lot...

JJ French at High Rack Outfitters keeps a pack of lion and bear dogs. If your friend is positive it's a lion (not a big bobcat), and you have fresh sign, you might try giving him a call. His forum handle is bullzibrat.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.www.NewHopeEquine.com - Health and Healing through Horses.

Jasb, that would be some good bait. And would give a good chase.
Glens, It is a mo-lion cause of the long tail and it was seen in the middle of the road too.

We shot one at the ranch in old mex that was eating a calf about every two weeks. We found trace of a calf that she had dragged over a mile and cover the carcas with brush. We followed the blood trail to find it. My cousin and I set up in a different mesquite trees and used a javelina call at night. The first night it came in right away, but we both missed... she came out too close for confort and got us shakin. The second night we set up again and heard her but probably sniffed us. On the third night almost at day break, my cousin saw her and shot her.
Find a fresh kill and watch it or use predator calls work. I used a javelina call because there are a lot of javis and that is what the cats eat the most.

my brother in law saw a mt. lion yesterday on his property and called me. was wanting to know how to get it off his property. says he put up a feeder for deer/hogs and nothing has come to in in 2 weeks that he's had it up. says drive 15 to 20 miles in both directions away from his house and there is deer everywhere...... anyone have any other suggestions (that has killed a cat) on how to nail this sucker...
he's gonna try live bait and hope he sees the cat during the kill or find the kill after and sit and wait on it. if neither of those work i'll be taking my foxpro down there and see if we cant get him
